Part 2

The Children Who Changed Everything

I thought walking out of that hospital room would be the hardest thing I had ever done.

I was wrong.

The hardest part came the next morning.

At 7:12 a.m., my phone began ringing.

Daniel.

Then his mother.

Then Natalie.

I ignored every call.

By eight o’clock, messages started arriving.

You are destroying your husband’s reputation.

How could you humiliate him like this?

Those children are innocent.

I stared at the screen.

That last message made me pause.

The children were innocent.

I agreed.

That was why I had no intention of hurting them.

But protecting innocent children did not mean protecting the adults who had built their lives on lies.

At nine, my attorney arrived.

I placed every document I had collected on the table.

He looked through the files silently.

Then he looked at me.

“Evelyn, do you understand what happens if these records are authentic?”

“Yes.”

“Daniel could lose control of the company.”

“I know.”

“And Natalie?”

“She may lose everything Daniel promised her.”

He closed the folder.

“You’ve been preparing for this for a long time.”

I looked toward the window.

“Twelve years.”

Then my phone rang again.

This time, it wasn’t Daniel.

It was the hospital.

The receptionist asked if I could return immediately.

“There is something the doctor needs to discuss with you.”

My stomach tightened.

When I arrived, the specialist was waiting.

He looked unusually serious.

“Mrs. Cross, there is one more thing.”

“What?”

He handed me another medical file.

“This concerns your husband.”

I opened it.

My hands went cold.

The fertility report wasn’t the only thing Daniel had hidden.

There was another diagnosis.

One that had been made years before our marriage.

A diagnosis that could explain everything.

I looked up.

“Why wasn’t I told about this?”

The doctor hesitated.

“Because your husband specifically instructed the clinic never to release the information to you.”

I stared at the document.

Then I noticed the date.

The diagnosis had been made six months before our wedding.

Daniel had known.

He had known everything.

And he had married me anyway.

Not because he loved me.

But because he needed me.

I suddenly remembered something Daniel had said during our engagement.

“Evelyn, I don’t need someone who asks questions. I need someone who understands me.”

Back then, I thought it was romantic.

Now I understood.

He wasn’t looking for a wife.

He was looking for someone he could control.

I closed the file.

“Doctor, I need one more favor.”

“What?”

“Can you tell me who the biological father of Natalie’s children is?”

The doctor looked startled.

“I can’t reveal another person’s medical information.”

“I understand.”

I stood.

“But I think you already know.”

He said nothing.

And his silence gave me my answer.

There was another man.

Someone Daniel had never considered.

Someone connected to his own company.

And when I walked out of the hospital, I knew exactly where I needed to go.

The Voss Meridian accounting department.

Because the truth wasn’t buried in the hospital anymore.

It was buried in Daniel’s company.

And I was about to dig it up.
