Part 3

The Man Behind the Numbers

The accounting office went silent when I walked in.

Everyone knew I was Daniel Cross’s wife.

They also knew something was happening.

The receptionist stood immediately.

“Mrs. Cross, Mr. Cross didn’t say you were coming.”

“I don’t need permission to enter a company I partially own.”

She froze.

I smiled.

“Please tell the chief accountant I’m here.”

Five minutes later, Arthur Bell appeared.

Arthur had worked for Daniel for sixteen years.

He had always avoided me.

Now he looked terrified.

“Mrs. Cross.”

“Arthur.”

“I don’t think this is a good time.”

“I think it’s exactly the right time.”

I placed a folder on his desk.

“Tell me about Project Meridian.”

His face lost color.

“I don’t know what you mean.”

“Then I’ll make it easier.”

I opened the folder.

“Why did the company transfer $2.4 million to a private consulting firm owned by a man named Thomas Reed?”

Arthur didn’t answer.

“Why did that same company receive payments every month after Natalie became pregnant?”

Still nothing.

I leaned closer.

“Arthur, I’m not asking because I suspect something.”

I pushed a document toward him.

“I’m asking because I already know.”

His shoulders dropped.

For several seconds, he stared at the floor.

Then he whispered:

“Thomas Reed was Natalie’s boyfriend.”

I already suspected it.

But hearing it aloud still hurt.

“Before Daniel?”

Arthur nodded.

“During Daniel?”

Another nod.

“And after?”

Arthur swallowed.

“Yes.”

I closed my eyes.

Suddenly everything made sense.

The apartment Daniel had bought for Natalie.

The expensive jewelry.

The secret bank account.

The unexplained payments.

Daniel hadn’t been supporting his children.

He had been paying another man’s debts.

But there was something even bigger.

“Why was Thomas being paid through the company?”

Arthur looked at me.

“Because Mr. Cross believed Thomas knew something.”

“What?”

Arthur hesitated.

Then he whispered:

“About the accident.”

My heart stopped.

“What accident?”

“The one that caused Daniel’s medical condition.”

I stared at him.

Daniel had always told me his accident was insignificant.

A minor car crash.

A few broken bones.

Nothing more.

But Arthur knew otherwise.

“Mrs. Cross,” he said quietly, “your husband wasn’t the victim.”

I couldn’t breathe.

“What are you saying?”

“The accident wasn’t random.”

Before I could ask another question, the office door opened.

Thomas Reed walked in.

He was carrying a black briefcase.

He stopped when he saw me.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then he said something that made my blood run cold.

“Evelyn, I’ve been trying to find you for twelve years.”

I stared at him.

“Why?”

He placed the briefcase on the desk.

“Because Daniel didn’t cause the accident.”

He opened it.

Inside were photographs.

Police reports.

Bank statements.

And one photograph of Daniel standing beside a damaged vehicle.

But that wasn’t what frightened me.

It was the date.

The accident happened three days before Daniel met me.

Thomas looked directly into my eyes.

“Your husband didn’t marry you because he loved you.”

He pushed another photograph toward me.

“He married you because he was afraid you would discover what happened that night.”

I picked up the photograph.

And suddenly I recognized the other person standing beside Daniel.

My father.
