PART 3 — THE MAN WHO WAS SUPPOSED TO BE DEAD

I couldn’t move.

Daniel stood between me and the door.

Claire was crying.

And outside…

My husband’s voice came again.

“Margaret, please.”

I grabbed the edge of the table.

“That’s impossible.”

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

“Your father died.”

“I know what the paperwork says.”

“What does that mean?”

Daniel didn’t answer.

The knocking came again.

Three times.

Then silence.

I walked toward the door.

Daniel grabbed my wrist.

“Don’t.”

I looked into my son’s eyes.

He was terrified.

Not of the man outside.

Of what I might learn.

I opened the door.

The man standing there was older.

Much thinner.

Gray hair.

A scar across his cheek.

But the eyes were the same.

My husband’s eyes.

He looked at me.

And whispered,

“Hello, Margaret.”

I slapped him.

Hard.

He didn’t move.

I slapped him again.

“Where have you been?”

His eyes filled with tears.

“I couldn’t come home.”

“You’ve been dead!”

“I know.”

“You let me bury an empty coffin?”

He looked down.

“I’m sorry.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“Tell her everything.”

My husband looked at him.

Then at Claire.

Then at me.

“I didn’t abandon you.”

“Then why?”

He reached into his coat.

He pulled out an old envelope.

My name was written across it.

In my husband’s handwriting.

The date was four years earlier.

The day before his funeral.

I opened it.

Inside was one sentence.

If you are reading this, they found me.

I looked up.

“Who?”

My husband sat down.

“Your brother.”

I froze.

“My brother died fifteen years ago.”

He shook his head.

“No.”

He looked at Daniel.

“Your uncle has been alive this entire time.”

I couldn’t speak.

Then my husband explained.

Years ago, he had discovered that my brother had been stealing money from a family business.

When he threatened to expose him, my brother threatened our family.

So my husband disappeared.

He staged his death to protect us.

But there was one thing he never expected.

My brother had found Daniel.

And he had been blackmailing him for years.

I turned toward my son.

“Is this true?”

Daniel lowered his head.

“Yes.”

“What did he want?”

Daniel’s eyes filled with tears.

“He wanted the clock.”

I stared at the silver clock.

“The clock?”

My husband nodded.

“There is something hidden inside it.”

I walked toward the clock.

My hands shook as I opened the back panel.

Inside was a small metal compartment.

And inside that…

A flash drive.

I looked at my husband.

“What is this?”

He whispered:

“Proof.”

“Proof of what?”

He looked toward the window.

“Everything your brother has done.”

Then suddenly—

The lights went out.

Claire screamed.

The front door slammed open.

Someone shouted from outside:

“GET AWAY FROM THE CLOCK!”

And my husband whispered:

“They found us.”
