The basement seemed to disappear around me.

“Your brother survived.”
I stopped breathing.

“Thomas has been alive for three years.”
My eyes filled with tears.
“Where is he?”
Gabriel looked toward the top of the stairs.
“He was investigating the people who destroyed your family.”
“Where is he now?”
Gabriel’s jaw tightened.
“Inside this house.”
Maya suddenly turned and ran.
One of Gabriel’s men caught her before she reached the corridor.
She screamed and fought wildly.
Gabriel didn’t even look at her.
“Why is Thomas here?” I asked.
“Because he discovered the final piece of the conspiracy.”
“Julian?”
“No.”
Gabriel’s eyes moved toward Maya.
“Her.”
Maya stopped struggling.
David stared at her.
I could barely process the words.
“She caused the crash?”
“She helped arrange it,” Gabriel said. “But that isn’t the worst thing she has done.”
Maya began shaking her head.
“He’s lying!”
Gabriel continued.
“Thomas came to this estate two days ago. He planned to take you out and expose everyone involved.”
“Then where is he?”
Gabriel looked at David.
“Search the east wing.”
One of the men behind him spoke into his radio.
A voice immediately answered.
“East wing is clear.”
“Check the tunnels beneath the old wine cellar.”
Maya’s face changed.
It was subtle.
But Gabriel noticed.
He walked toward her.
“What did you do to Thomas?”
“I don’t know who you’re talking about.”
Gabriel pulled a photograph from his pocket.
It showed my brother standing outside the Kensington estate three days earlier.
He looked thinner.
Older.
But he was alive.
A sob rose in my throat.
Maya glanced at the photograph.
Then she smiled.
It was the same cruel smile she had worn when she entered the basement.
“You’re all too late.”
Gabriel grabbed her by the throat.
“Where is he?”
Maya struggled to breathe.

Gabriel released her.
“Where is the key?”
“Julian has it.”
Suddenly, one of Gabriel’s men shouted from the top of the stairs.
“Sir!”
Gabriel turned.
The man held a phone displaying a live security feed.
On the screen, Julian stood inside a stone chamber.
My brother was chained to a chair behind him.
Thomas was bleeding, but alive.
Julian held a gun against his head.
Then Julian looked directly into the security camera.
He knew we were watching.
His voice came through the phone.
“Victoria.”
My body trembled.
Julian smiled.
“If you want your brother alive, come to the vault alone.”
Gabriel immediately shook his head.
“You’re not going anywhere.”
Julian pressed the gun harder against Thomas’s temple.
“You have five minutes.”
“Julian!” I screamed.
He ignored me.
“There’s something your brother has been desperate to tell you.”
Thomas lifted his head.
Our eyes met through the screen.
He shouted one sentence before Julian struck him across the face.
“Victoria, Julian isn’t your husband’s real name!”
The video suddenly went black.
