The first officer stared through the open door at the screen.
The name displayed there was Commissioner Daniel Mercer.
His face went pale.
“That’s impossible,” he whispered.
Victoria looked at him.
“What is?”
“He doesn’t call people directly.”
“Apparently, he does today.”
The phone stopped ringing.
Three seconds later, it rang again.
Victoria sighed.
“One of you should answer it.”
Neither officer moved.
“Why?” the second officer asked.
“Because you’ve already detained me.”
The first officer slowly removed the handcuffs.
Click.
Victoria rubbed her wrists and stepped away from the vehicle.
Then she picked up the phone.
“Victoria speaking.”
A man’s voice came through the speaker.
“Are you safe?”
Victoria looked at the two officers.
“For the moment.”
There was silence.
Then the commissioner said:
“Do not trust either officer.”
The first inspector stepped backward.
Victoria’s expression hardened.
“Why?”
“Because the investigation has changed.”
“How?”
“We found the missing evidence.”
Victoria stopped breathing for a moment.
“The evidence from the roadside shooting?”
“Yes.”
The second officer’s face suddenly changed.
Victoria noticed.
“You know what he’s talking about.”
The officer said nothing.
Victoria ended the call.
Then she looked at both men.
“Now we’re going to have a very different conversation.”
