PART 4 — THE MAN WHO KNEW MY FATHER The fire alarm continued screaming. Nurses rushed into the hallway. Patients were being moved away from the rooms.

Someone shouted that there was smoke near the service elevator.

But I couldn’t move.

Rachel’s hand was still in mine.

“Danny,” she whispered.

“We have to get you out of here.”

“No.”

“What?”

She shook her head.

“Not through the main hallway.”

The nurse looked at her.

Rachel pointed toward the bathroom.

“There is another exit.”

I had no idea how she knew.

The nurse did.

She opened a small door beside the bathroom.

Behind it was a narrow corridor.

“Maintenance access,” she said.

We moved quickly.

I pushed Rachel’s wheelchair.

The nurse walked beside us.

The alarm continued behind us.

When we reached the end of the corridor, we entered a stairwell.

The nurse looked at me.

“Take her downstairs.”

“What about you?”

“I’ll get security.”

We moved down one floor.

Then another.

Rachel’s breathing became heavier.

“Are you okay?”

“No.”

She smiled faintly.

“At least you’re finally asking.”

I almost laughed.

Even now, she could still make me laugh.

We reached the ground floor.

A security guard was waiting.

He looked at Rachel.

Then at me.

“Mr. Whitmore?”

“Yes.”

“Someone tried to enter her room.”

My stomach dropped.

“When?”

“About ten minutes ago.”

“Did you catch him?”

The guard shook his head.

“He knew exactly where the cameras were.”

Rachel closed her eyes.

“He’s been watching the hospital.”

The guard looked uncomfortable.

“There’s more.”

He handed me a photograph from a security camera.

The image was blurry.

But I recognized the man.

The gray coat.

The dark hat.

Thomas Whitlock.

I looked at Rachel.

“He was here.”

She nodded.

“I told you.”

I wanted to call the police.

Rachel stopped me.

“Not yet.”

“Why?”

“Because if Thomas knows we have the evidence, he’ll disappear.”

I stared at her.

“What evidence?”

She pointed to the folder.

“Everything.”

We went to a private consultation room.

Rachel told me Marcus Bell had been investigating Thomas for eighteen months.

He discovered something even bigger.

Thomas wasn’t working alone.

Someone inside the hospital had been giving him information.

Someone had been telling him about Rachel’s appointments.

Her surgeries.

Her medication.

Her condition.

I felt sick.

“Who?”

Rachel looked at the nurse.

The nurse’s face changed.

“No,” she whispered.

Rachel nodded.

“She doesn’t know who.”

The nurse stepped closer.

“Rachel, I swear I never told anyone anything.”

“I know.”

Rachel took her hand.

“You were one of the only people I trusted.”

The nurse began crying.

“I wanted to tell him.”

“Tell who?”

“Danny.”

She looked at me.

“Rachel kept saying your name after every procedure.”

I couldn’t speak.

“She would wake up and ask if you had called.”

Rachel looked away.

The nurse continued.

“She told me she couldn’t let you know she was sick because she was afraid you’d stop living your life.”

I looked at Rachel.

“You heard that?”

Rachel nodded.

“I heard everything.”

I sat beside her.

For three years, I had imagined her leaving because she wanted freedom.

She had actually been fighting to protect the person she loved.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

“Daniel Whitmore.”

Silence.

Then a man’s voice.

“You should have stayed out of this.”

I stood.

“Thomas?”

A quiet laugh.

“You always were your father’s son.”

“Where are you?”

“You’re asking the wrong question.”

“What do you want?”

“I want what your father stole from me.”

“My father didn’t steal anything.”

“He stole my future.”

“He stopped you from stealing his company.”

Silence.

Then Thomas said:

“You have no idea what your father did.”

The line went dead.

I looked at Rachel.

She was pale.

“Danny…”

“What?”

“My father was right.”

“What?”

She stared at me.

“Your father didn’t create the trust because he wanted to give you money.”

“Then why?”

“Because he knew Thomas would eventually come after you.”

I opened the folder again.

At the bottom was a handwritten note.

My father’s handwriting.

I recognized it immediately.

Danny,

If you are reading this, Thomas has found the trust.

Do not trust anyone who tells you the money belongs to you.

The money is only part of the story.

The real inheritance is the evidence.

I looked at Rachel.

“What evidence?”

She pointed to a USB drive taped beneath the folder.

I pulled it free.

A tiny black drive.

“What is on this?”

“Everything.”

“What everything?”

“Your father’s recordings.
Bank transfers.
Names.
Dates.
Payments.
And one recording that explains why he disappeared from the business.”

My heart pounded.

We needed a computer.

The nurse brought us into an administrative office.

I inserted the drive.

There were dozens of files.

I opened the first.

My father’s voice filled the room.

“If you’re hearing this, Danny, I failed to protect you.”

I froze.

His voice sounded older than I remembered.

“I trusted Thomas.
That was my mistake.”

The recording continued.

“Thomas wasn’t stealing money for himself.
He was moving it for someone else.”

Rachel looked at me.

Someone else.

I opened another file.

A list appeared.

Names.

Companies.

Payments.

Government officials.

Lawyers.

Business owners.

Then I saw a name that made my heart stop.

Karen Whitlock.

I stared at it.

Rachel whispered:

“That’s why Karen was involved.”

“Whitlock?”

Rachel nodded.

“Karen is Thomas’s sister.”

I leaned back.

The woman who had seated us together at the wedding.

The woman who had encouraged us to dance.

The woman who had brought Rachel back into my life.

She had been part of it.

“Why would she help him?”

Rachel looked at the screen.

“Because Thomas promised her something.”

“What?”

“The trust.”

Suddenly everything made sense.

Karen had arranged the seating.

Karen had played the wedding song.

Karen had created the opportunity for Rachel and me to reconnect.

But why?

Rachel answered the question before I could ask.

“She wanted to know whether you still loved me.”

I stared at her.

“Why?”

“Because if you didn’t, she could convince you to sign away your rights.”

My stomach turned.

The entire wedding had been a trap.

But then another file appeared.

Created three days earlier.

The title was simple.

FINAL CONTINGENCY.

I clicked it.

A video opened.

Thomas appeared on screen.

Behind him was a familiar house.

My house.

He looked directly into the camera.

“Danny,” he said.

“If you’re watching this, Rachel has already told you enough to make you dangerous.”

Then he smiled.

“But there is one thing she hasn’t told you.”

The video paused.

Thomas leaned closer.

“Your father didn’t leave you four million dollars.”

The screen went black.

Then one final sentence appeared.

THE TRUST BELONGS TO RACHEL.

I looked at her.

She began crying.

“Danny…”

“What does he mean?”

She whispered:

“I was never protecting you from my illness.”

She looked directly into my eyes.

“I was protecting you from what your father left me.”
