PART 4 — THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH I did not sleep that night. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw my father’s hand tangled in my hair.

I felt the cold porch beneath my knee.

I heard Courtney laughing.

Then I saw Lucas’s handwriting.

If Charles Baldwin is standing in our house, then the man I feared has finally made his move.

At 4:17 in the morning, my phone rang.

It was Detective Mitchell.

“Mrs. Gallagher, I’m sorry to wake you.”

“What happened?”

“We located Daniel Reed.”

My heart began pounding.

“Where is he?”

“He agreed to speak with us. But he has asked for legal protection before giving a full statement.”

“Why?”

“He says he is afraid.”

I sat up.

“Afraid of my father?”

“We haven’t confirmed that.”

“Detective, please.”

He paused.

“Daniel claims he saw Lucas arguing with a man at the warehouse. He says the argument became heated.”

“Was it Charles?”

“He believes it was.”

I closed my eyes.

“What happened after the argument?”

“We’re still verifying his account.”

“Is my father involved in the investigation?”

“Yes. We are examining his financial records, his vehicle, and his communications.”

I felt a strange mixture of relief and terror.

For the first time, someone was looking at my father as a suspect instead of treating him as a grieving relative.

After the call ended, Samantha arrived at the hospital.

She was carrying the blue folder.

I stared at it.

“Where did you find that?”

“In a secure storage box Lucas rented.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because I found it less than an hour ago.”

She placed it on the bed.

The folder was worn and dark blue.

There was no name on the cover.

Only a small handwritten symbol.

A circle with a line through it.

I recognized it immediately.

Lucas used to draw that symbol on the backs of envelopes when he wanted me to know something was private.

I opened the folder.

The first document was a shipping manifest.

It listed several containers delivered to Baldwin-Gallagher Logistics.

The second document was an invoice.

The third was a photograph.

I looked at it.

It showed my father standing outside a warehouse.

Beside him was a man I didn’t recognize.

Samantha leaned closer.

“That’s Richard Hale.”

“Who is he?”

“A former contractor. He worked with the company several years ago.”

“What does he have to do with my father?”

“We don’t know yet.”

I turned to the next page.

It was a copy of an email Lucas had printed.

The subject line read:

RE: Unauthorized access to company funds.

The sender was Richard Hale.

The message was short.

*Lucas, I know you believe Charles is involved. I am not asking you to trust me. I am asking you to look at the account numbers.*

The money is not going where you think it is going.

*Someone is using a network of shell companies to move funds. Charles may be involved, but he is not the only person.*

I looked at Samantha.

“Shell companies?”

“Yes.”

“Could my father have stolen the money?”

“Possibly. But we need evidence.”

I kept reading.

The final sentence of the email was underlined.

If you confront him, do not do it alone.

I remembered the morning my father arrived.

He had known exactly where Lucas kept his desk files.

He had known about the house.

He had known that I was vulnerable.

He had known something about the estate.

And he had brought Courtney with him.

Why Courtney?

I looked at Samantha.

“Why did my father marry her?”

Samantha frowned.

“What?”

“Courtney. Why would he marry someone so young?”

“I don’t know.”

“She was laughing when he dragged me out. She acted like she knew something.”

Samantha said nothing.

I continued looking through the folder.

Then I found a handwritten note.

It was in Lucas’s handwriting.

Courtney Baldwin.

Underneath the name was a phone number.

And beneath that:

Ask her about the night Charles came home with blood on his sleeve.

I dropped the paper.

“What is this?”

Samantha took it.

Her expression became serious.

“Victoria, don’t make assumptions.”

“Lucas wrote her name.”

“Yes. And we need to understand why.”

I reached for my phone.

“I want to talk to her.”

“No.”

“Why not?”

“Because she may be involved. And if she is, she could destroy evidence or warn someone.”

I stared at the note.

“What if she knows who killed Lucas?”

Samantha looked at me.

“Then we need to make sure she tells the truth.”

A knock came at the door.

Detective Mitchell entered with another officer.

“Mrs. Gallagher, we need to ask you about your father.”

I nodded.

“What do you want to know?”

“Did Charles have access to your husband’s financial records?”

“Yes. He used to visit the house.”

“How often?”

“Sometimes once a week. Sometimes more.”

“Did he ever ask about the company?”

“Yes.”

“Did he ever mention Richard Hale?”

I looked at Samantha.

Then I answered.

“No.”

The detective wrote something down.

“Did Charles ever threaten your husband?”

I remembered the arguments.

The raised voices.

The slammed doors.

The way Lucas would go quiet afterward.

“He said Lucas was keeping money from the family.”

“Did he ever say anything about the warehouse?”

I swallowed.

“He asked me about it three days before the accident.”

The detective looked up.

“What exactly did he ask?”

I told him.

When I finished, he exchanged a glance with the other officer.

“Mrs. Gallagher, we need to be honest with you. We believe Charles may have been planning to take control of the company before your husband died.”

My hands began shaking.

“Why?”

“Because we found communications between him and a financial consultant. They discussed transferring company assets.”

“Before Lucas died?”

“Yes.”

I looked down at my stomach.

The baby moved.

I felt a wave of sadness so powerful that I could barely breathe.

Lucas had been trying to protect us.

And I hadn’t even known we were in danger.

Detective Mitchell continued.

“There is also another issue.”

“What?”

“Your father’s emergency key.”

I looked up.

“What about it?”

“Did you give him permission to use it?”

“No.”

“Did you know he had it?”

“Yes. I had forgotten to take it back.”

“Has anyone else had access to your keys?”

I thought about Courtney.

Then I remembered something.

A few months earlier, Courtney had visited the house while my father was out.

She had asked to use the bathroom.

She had been alone for nearly twenty minutes.

I had thought nothing of it.

Now I wondered what she had been doing.

“I don’t know,” I said.

The detective nodded.

“We are checking whether anyone entered the house before your father arrived.”

After he left, Samantha sat quietly beside me.

I opened the folder again.

At the bottom was a small envelope.

It had my name on it.

Inside was a photograph of Lucas and me at our wedding.

On the back, Lucas had written:

You once asked me why I never trusted Charles.

*The answer is not in our marriage. It is in his past.*

I turned the photograph over.

There was another line.

Ask him about the Baldwin family warehouse fire.

I looked at Samantha.

“What warehouse fire?”

She opened her laptop.

“I’m going to find out.”

An hour later, she looked up.

“Victoria, there was a warehouse fire in Syracuse twelve years ago.”

“Who owned it?”

“Charles Baldwin.”

My heart sank.

“Was anyone killed?”

“No. But the insurance claim was enormous.”

“Did Lucas know about it?”

“Yes. He investigated it when he acquired part of the logistics business.”

I felt cold.

“Why?”

“Because some of the records didn’t match.”

I stared at her.

“What records?”

“Inventory records. Insurance records. Payment records.”

The room fell silent.

Then my phone rang.

It was Courtney.

I answered.

“Hello?”

Her voice was trembling.

“Victoria, I need to see you.”

“Why?”

“Because I know what Charles did.”

My grip tightened around the phone.

“What did he do?”

“I can’t say over the phone.”

“Then say it now.”

She began crying.

“Your husband didn’t die because of an accident.”

I couldn’t speak.

Courtney whispered:

“Charles was there that night. And he wasn’t alone.”

The call ended.

I looked at Samantha.

She had heard every word.

Then a new message appeared on my phone.

Courtney is lying to you.

A second message followed.

She was the one who opened the warehouse door.

I stared at the screen.

Two people were accusing each other.

Both claimed to know the truth.

And somewhere in the middle of it all was my husband’s death.
