PART 6 — THE SIGNATURE THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING Samantha didn’t answer immediately. She looked toward the hospital door.

Then she closed it.

“Victoria, there are things I should have told you earlier.”

My heart began pounding.

“About the insurance papers?”

“Yes.”

“Who signed them?”

“Lucas.”

I stared at her.

“That doesn’t make sense.”

“He signed a preliminary document.”

“When?”

“Two days before the accident.”

“What did it say?”

“It authorized an internal review of the company’s insurance policies.”

I frowned.

“Why would that matter?”

“Because one of the policies had been changed without his knowledge.”

I looked down at my hands.

“Changed how?”

“The beneficiary information. The insured assets. And the person authorized to make claims.”

I felt cold.

“Who was listed?”

Samantha hesitated.

“Charles Baldwin.”

I couldn’t breathe.

“My father?”

“Yes.”

“Why would Lucas allow that?”

“He didn’t.”

I stared at her.

“Then how did it happen?”

“We believe someone forged Lucas’s signature.”

The room seemed to tilt.

My father had forged my signature.

Someone had forged Lucas’s.

The same people who had been moving money through shell companies.

The same people who had access to the company’s records.

The same people who might have known about the insurance.

I whispered:

“Was it Richard?”

“We don’t know.”

“Was it Charles?”

“We don’t know.”

“Then what do we know?”

Samantha took a deep breath.

“We know the insurance changes were made through a third-party financial office. We know your father had contact with that office. And we know Lucas discovered the changes shortly before his death.”

I looked at the blue folder.

“Is that why he was investigating the warehouse?”

“Possibly.”

I picked up the letter again.

Lucas had written:

Start with the blue folder.

I looked at Samantha.

“What else is in there?”

She opened the folder and spread the documents across the bed.

There were bank records. Shipping manifests. Insurance forms. Emails. Photographs.

At the bottom was a small black notebook.

I opened it.

The first page contained a list of dates.

The second page contained names.

The third page contained one sentence.

Someone inside the company is helping Charles.

I stared at the words.

“Who?”

Samantha shook her head.

“Lucas never wrote the name.”

I turned the page.

There was a handwritten question.

Why did Charles know about the trust before Victoria did?

I looked up.

“What trust?”

Samantha sat back.

“The trust Lucas established for you.”

“When?”

“Six months before the accident.”

“Why didn’t I know?”

“Because Lucas wanted it to remain private until the estate was settled.”

I felt tears fill my eyes.

“He was planning for our child.”

“Yes.”

“What was in it?”

“Investments. Company shares. Cash. Property interests.”

“How much?”

Samantha paused.

“Enough to secure your future.”

I closed my eyes.

My father had told me the house needed to be sold.

He had tried to take control of the company.

He had attempted to access the trust.

And I hadn’t even known what Lucas had left for me.

Then I remembered something.

“Charles said Lucas left behind debts.”

Samantha nodded.

“That was a lie.”

I looked at her.

“How do you know?”

“Because the estate records show the opposite. Lucas had assets. He had insurance. He had a trust. And he had a plan.”

I felt a strange ache in my chest.

Lucas had spent months preparing for the future.

He had been buying baby furniture.

He had been choosing names.

He had been working late.

And all the while, he had been trying to protect me from a threat I couldn’t see.

My phone rang.

Detective Mitchell.

“Mrs. Gallagher, we have an update.”

“What happened?”

“We located the person who handled the insurance changes.”

“Who?”

“Her name is Elaine Porter. She worked for a financial services firm in Syracuse.”

“Does she know my father?”

“Yes.”

“Is she involved?”

“We are questioning her.”

“Did she sign anything?”

“She says she was instructed by someone using your father’s authorization.”

My hands began shaking.

“Who gave her the instructions?”

“She doesn’t know.”

“Then what does she know?”

“She remembers receiving a phone call from a woman.”

“A woman?”

“Yes.”

“What woman?”

“She says the voice belonged to someone named Courtney.”

I stared at Samantha.

My father’s young wife.

The woman who had laughed on my porch.

The woman who had claimed she was afraid of him.

I couldn’t speak.

Detective Mitchell continued.

“We are checking the call records. But we need you to understand that this does not prove Courtney forged anything.”

After the call ended, I looked at Samantha.

“Courtney was involved.”

“Possibly.”

“Why would she do this?”

“We don’t know.”

I stood carefully, feeling the weight of my pregnancy.

“I need to talk to her.”

Samantha shook her head.

“Not alone.”

“I won’t be alone.”

We contacted Detective Mitchell.

Courtney agreed to meet us at the police station.

When she arrived, she looked exhausted.

I sat across from her.

“Did you call Elaine Porter?”

Courtney’s eyes widened.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because Charles told me to.”

“What did he ask you to say?”

She looked at the detective.

“I don’t remember exactly.”

“Try.”

Courtney swallowed.

“He told me to say that Victoria had approved the changes.”

My heart broke all over again.

“You used my name?”

“I didn’t know what it was for.”

“You called a financial office and pretended to be me?”

“I was following Charles’s instructions.”

I looked away.

“Did you know about the trust?”

Courtney nodded slowly.

“Yes.”

“How?”

“Charles told me.”

“When?”

“Before the accident.”

My hands tightened.

“Why did he know about it?”

“He had been looking through Lucas’s files.”

I closed my eyes.

My father had entered our home.

He had searched through our private documents.

He had learned about the trust.

He had planned to take it.

Courtney began crying.

“I didn’t know he would hurt you.”

“But you knew he was lying.”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because I was afraid.”

I looked at her.

“Afraid of what?”

“Charles told me that if I left him, he would make sure I had nothing. He said he could ruin me.”

The detective leaned forward.

“Mrs. Baldwin, did Charles ever threaten Lucas?”

Courtney nodded.

“He said Lucas would regret refusing to help him.”

“Did he mention the accident?”

She looked down.

“Not directly.”

“What did he say?”

“He said that if Lucas didn’t cooperate, someone would make sure he never got the chance to change his mind.”

The room went silent.

I felt my baby move.

A small, gentle kick.

I placed my hand over my stomach.

Lucas had wanted to protect this child.

I wanted to protect it too.

Detective Mitchell asked Courtney another question.

“Did you see Charles on the night of the accident?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“At the warehouse.”

“Did he leave with anyone?”

Courtney hesitated.

“I saw Richard Hale.”

“Did Charles speak to him?”

“Yes.”

“What did they discuss?”

“I couldn’t hear everything. But I heard Richard say, ‘The car is ready.’”

My stomach dropped.

“The car?”

Courtney nodded.

“I thought he meant Charles’s car.”

Detective Mitchell looked at Samantha.

“Did you see anyone else?”

Courtney shook her head.

“Did you hear any threats?”

“Yes.”

“What kind?”

Courtney’s voice became very quiet.

“Richard told Charles that Lucas wouldn’t be a problem after tonight.”

I closed my eyes.

I couldn’t listen anymore.

But then Courtney said something else.

“There was another person.”

I opened my eyes.

“Who?”

Courtney stared at me.

“I don’t know his name.”

“What did he look like?”

“He was standing near the warehouse door. He had a scar above his eyebrow.”

Richard Hale.

I looked at Samantha.

“Was Richard the driver?”

Courtney shook her head.

“No. Richard was arguing with Charles. The other man was the one who left in the dark SUV.”

Detective Mitchell immediately stood.

“Mrs. Baldwin, are you certain?”

“Yes.”

“Did you see his face?”

“Not clearly.”

“Did Charles know him?”

“Yes.”

“Are you certain?”

Courtney nodded.

“Charles called him by his first name.”

“What name?”

Courtney looked at me.

“Mark.”

My heart stopped.

Mark.

My father’s former business partner.

A man I had known since childhood.

A man who had attended my wedding.

A man who had hugged Lucas at the reception.

A man who had told me he was sorry when Lucas died.

I turned toward Samantha.

“Mark?”

She looked stunned.

“Mark Dalton?”

I nodded.

Detective Mitchell was already making a call.

“Mrs. Gallagher, we need to verify this immediately.”

But before he could leave, my phone buzzed.

The message came from the unknown number.

You finally found him.

Then another.

But Mark Dalton is only the beginning.

I looked at Samantha.

“What does that mean?”

She didn’t answer.

Because her phone had begun ringing.

She looked at the screen.

The color drained from her face.

“Who is it?” I asked.

She turned the phone toward me.

The caller ID showed a name.

Lucas Gallagher.

My husband had been dead for three weeks.

And his phone was calling Samantha.
