PART 5 — THE LAST FILE Daniel placed the briefcase on the table. “You’ve all misunderstood the situation.”

Richard stared at him.

“You worked for my father.”

“I did.”

“You helped him steal.”

Daniel smiled.

“Your father wasn’t the mastermind.”

Everyone went silent.

“Then who was?”

Daniel looked at me.

“Your father.”

My stomach dropped.

Again.

I wanted to scream that it couldn’t be true.

But Daniel opened the briefcase.

Inside were original accounting ledgers.

Private correspondence.

Audio recordings.

And a handwritten confession.

Daniel placed the confession in front of me.

I recognized my father’s handwriting.

I began reading.

The words blurred through my tears.

My father admitted that he had helped conceal the company’s losses.

But he also admitted something else.

Richard’s father had been blackmailing him.

And the person who ultimately stole the money wasn’t either of them.

It was Daniel.

Daniel had created false accounts and moved the money through shell companies.

My father discovered it.

He threatened to expose Daniel.

Daniel retaliated by framing Richard’s father.

Then he used David as the perfect scapegoat.

Richard stared at Daniel.

“You destroyed my family.”

Daniel didn’t react.

“You destroyed his family too,” he said.

He pointed toward me.

“Your father made mistakes.”

“But you destroyed everything.”

Daniel shrugged.

“People do what they’re forced to do.”

Tyler stepped forward.

“What do you want?”

“The trust.”

Tyler stared.

Daniel smiled.

“Your grandfather left it in your name because he believed you were honest.”

“And you want me to give it to you?”

“No.”

Daniel opened another document.

“I want you to sign control of it to a company.”

“What company?”

Daniel smiled.

“Mine.”

Richard suddenly lunged toward him.

David grabbed Richard.

“Don’t!”

Daniel pulled a small device from his pocket.

“If you touch me, everything in this briefcase disappears.”

Richard froze.

Daniel continued.

“I have copies.”

I stared at him.

“You planned all of this.”

“Yes.”

“How did you know about Tyler?”

“Because your father told me.”

I looked at David.

David looked devastated.

“I didn’t know he was still alive.”

Daniel laughed.

“You always were terrible at understanding the consequences of your choices.”

Then Tyler did something none of us expected.

He smiled.

Daniel frowned.

“What?”

Tyler reached into his pocket.

“My phone has been recording since we entered.”

Daniel’s face changed.

Richard looked at Tyler.

“You recorded everything?”

Tyler nodded.

“Every word.”

Daniel stepped toward him.

“Give me the phone.”

“No.”

Daniel’s confidence disappeared.

Tyler continued.

“And I already sent a copy.”

“To whom?”

“The police.”

Silence.

Then, from outside, we heard sirens.

Daniel’s face went blank.

He had been so focused on controlling everyone else that he had forgotten one thing:

Evidence doesn’t have to stay inside a briefcase.

It can exist in hundreds of places.

Police entered the warehouse minutes later.

Daniel was arrested.

The files were secured.

And the trust was placed under court supervision.

Richard wasn’t arrested.

Instead, he gave a full statement.

He admitted that he had approached Tyler because he wanted access to the trust.

But over time, he genuinely became attached to him.

That didn’t erase what he had done.

Tyler still refused to speak to him.

As for David, he stood outside the warehouse long after everyone had left.

Tyler approached him.

“I don’t know if I can forgive you.”

David nodded.

“I don’t expect you to.”

“I don’t know if I can call you Dad.”

“I understand.”

Tyler looked at him.

“But I want to hear everything.”

David began crying.

“I’ll tell you everything.”

And for the first time in twenty years, father and son sat together.

Not as strangers.

Not as enemies.

But as two people trying to understand how they had lost so much time.

I stood nearby.

Watching them.

And I realized something.

The truth doesn’t always repair what was broken.

Sometimes it simply gives you the information you need to decide what happens next.

But the story wasn’t over.

Because three weeks later, Tyler received a letter.

There was no return address.

Inside was a single photograph.

It showed my father.

David.

Richard’s father.

And Daniel.

Standing together twenty-two years earlier.

On the back were five words:

“There was one more person.”

Tyler called me immediately.

I drove to his apartment.

We studied the photograph.

Then Tyler pointed at the corner.

Someone had been cut out.

Not digitally.

The photograph had literally been torn.

Someone had removed a person from it.

And underneath the torn edge, we could see part of a woman’s hand.

A wedding ring.

My wedding ring.

I stared at it.

Then I realized whose hand it was.

Mine.

But that was impossible.

I had never been there.

Or so I thought.
