PART 7 — THE BROTHER I NEVER KNEW

I stared at the photograph.

Daniel.

My mind raced through memories.

Daniel had been at our wedding.

He had helped me move into my first apartment.

He had stood beside me when my mother died.

He had even helped my father repair the roof of the house.

For years, I had thought of him as Jessica’s cousin.

A family friend.

Someone who was simply around.

But according to Jessica…

he was my brother.

“How?”

Jessica walked slowly into the room.

“Your father found the records.”

“Why didn’t he tell me?”

“He was afraid.”

“Of Daniel?”

“No.”

“Then who?”

She looked at Maya.

“Richard.”

I clenched my fists.

“What did Richard do?”

Jessica sat down.

“My father discovered that Margaret Miller had given birth to twins.”

Twins.

The word echoed in my mind.

“Me and Daniel?”

“Yes.”

“Then why did we grow up separately?”

“Because Richard arranged it.”

“Why?”

Jessica closed her eyes.

“He believed one child could be used to protect the family.”

“That makes no sense.”

“It didn’t to me either.”

She pulled another document from the safe.

“My father had been involved in illegal financial dealings through the hospital.”

Maya read the document.

“Money laundering?”

Jessica nodded.

“He used hospital accounts and shell companies.”

I looked at her.

“And what did that have to do with us?”

“Your mother discovered it.”

Margaret.

The woman I had never known was apparently at the center of everything.

“She threatened to expose him.”

“So he took her children?”

“Not exactly.”

Jessica looked down.

“Margaret died.”

My stomach dropped.

“How?”

“Officially, an accident.”

“And unofficially?”

“No one knows.”

“Your father knew?”

“Yes.”

“Did he kill her?”

“I don’t know.”

I stepped closer.

“Did he?”

Jessica looked at me.

“I don’t have proof.”

Maya interrupted.

“Don’t make an accusation without evidence.”

I nodded.

Jessica continued.

“After Margaret died, Richard separated the twins.”

“Why?”

“Because he needed leverage.”

“Leverage over whom?”

“Arthur.”

I froze.

“My father?”

“Yes.”

Jessica explained that Arthur had discovered Richard’s scheme.

Richard threatened to accuse him of helping conceal hospital records.

Arthur refused.

So Richard threatened something worse.

He threatened to reveal that Arthur had knowingly raised a child whose identity had been altered.

My father was terrified that I would be taken away.

“So he stayed silent,” Jessica said.

I swallowed hard.

“All these years…”

“He loved you.”

I looked toward the floor.

“Why didn’t he tell me?”

“Because he believed silence was the price of keeping you safe.”

Maya found another document.

“This says Daniel was adopted by another family.”

Jessica nodded.

“But Richard maintained contact.”

“Why?”

“He wanted to monitor him.”

“And you?”

“My adoption was part of the same arrangement.”

I stared at her.

“You and Daniel were raised separately.”

“Yes.”

“And somehow you ended up marrying me.”

Jessica’s face crumpled.

“I didn’t know who you were when we met.”

I wanted to believe her.

I desperately wanted to.

“How did you find out?”

“After we were married.”

“When?”

“Eight months ago.”

“Why?”

“My father died.”

She looked toward the safe.

“I found a hidden compartment in his office.”

“What was inside?”

“Your photograph.”

My heart sank.

“My photograph?”

“Yes.”

“Why would he have a photograph of me?”

“Because he’d been watching your family for years.”

I remembered something.

The first time Jessica introduced me to her father, Richard had stared at me for several seconds.

Then he’d said:

“You look familiar.”

I’d laughed.

Now that memory felt different.

Jessica reached into the safe.

“There is one more thing.”

She pulled out a small black notebook.

“My father kept records of every payment.”

Maya opened it.

Names.

Dates.

Amounts.

Hospital accounts.

Private investigators.

Bribes.

Then we found Arthur’s name.

Next to it was a date from twenty-eight years ago.

And a payment.

$50,000.

I stared at it.

“My father received money?”

Jessica shook her head.

“No.”

“Then why is his name there?”

Maya pointed to the description.

Payment refused.

My father’s name had been recorded because Richard had tried to pay him.

Arthur refused.

That changed everything.

My father hadn’t been part of the conspiracy.

He had been fighting it.

Then I saw another name.

Rebecca Miller.

$25,000.

But the payment wasn’t from Jessica.

It was from Richard Carter.

Years earlier.

Jessica looked horrified.

“My father paid her too.”

“Why?”

“To stay silent.”

I flipped through the notebook.

There were dozens of names.

Then I saw one that made my blood run cold.

Daniel Hayes.

I looked at Jessica.

“Why is Daniel in here?”

She didn’t answer.

Maya continued reading.

“There’s a payment dated three months ago.”

“To whom?”

“Daniel.”

“How much?”

“Fifty thousand dollars.”

I stood.

“Why would Richard pay my brother three months ago if Richard has been dead for years?”

Nobody answered.

Then my phone rang.

An unknown number.

I answered.

“Ethan?”

The voice was male.

I knew it immediately.

Daniel.

“Where are you?”

“I need to see you.”

“Why?”

“Because Jessica isn’t telling you everything.”

I looked at Jessica.

She closed her eyes.

“What do you want?”

“I want to tell you what happened the night we were born.”

My heart pounded.

“Where?”

“Your father’s storage unit.”

“Why there?”

“Because that’s where Arthur hid the original.”

“The original what?”

Daniel paused.

“Birth record.”

I felt a chill.

“Why do you have access to it?”

Another pause.

Then Daniel said:

“Because I was the one who gave it to your father.”

I couldn’t breathe.

“When?”

“Six months ago.”

“You knew all this?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because I was trying to protect you.”

“From what?”

Daniel’s voice became quiet.

“From the person who ordered Margaret’s death.”

The call ended.

I stared at the phone.

Jessica was crying.

“Ethan…”

“Did Daniel know who killed Margaret?”

She nodded.

“Yes.”

“Who?”

She looked at me.

“My father.”

Silence.

Maya whispered:

“Then we need to find Daniel.”

But before we could leave, another message appeared on my phone.

From Daniel.

Don’t trust Jessica.

Then another.

She wasn’t supposed to survive either.

I looked at my wife.

She was already staring at me.

And for the first time, I realized that whatever had happened twenty-eight years ago…

the people connected to it were still fighting to keep the truth buried.

And my father was lying unconscious in a hospital bed because he had finally gotten too close.
