PART 5 — WHAT ELENA KNEW

That afternoon, I took the documents to an attorney Grandma trusted.

She spent nearly four hours reviewing them.

Finally, she closed the folder.

“There is enough here to justify a full forensic audit.”

I asked the question I had been afraid to ask.

“Could my father have caused Elena’s death?”

The attorney immediately stopped me.

“We cannot make that conclusion from these documents.”

I nodded.

That wasn’t what I needed.

I needed facts.

Not fear.

Not guesses.

Facts.

The attorney continued.

“But there is something you should know.”

She showed me a document.

It was a copy of an email Elena had sent shortly before she died.

The recipient was my father.

The subject line said:

I KNOW ABOUT THE TRUST.

I read the message.

Elena had discovered that Grandma had created a trust for Lily.

She had also discovered that my father had tried to convince Grandma to remove me from control of it.

Elena threatened to reveal everything.

Then came another line.

“If you continue threatening my husband, I will take this to the authorities.”

I stared at the screen.

“My father threatened me?”

The attorney nodded.

“Apparently.”

That explained something I had never understood.

After Elena died, my father had suddenly become unusually generous.

He offered to help with bills.

He offered to pay Lily’s school expenses.

I had refused.

Then he became cold.

Now I knew why.

He hadn’t wanted to help.

He wanted influence.

That evening, Grandma asked me to come to her house.

She was sitting alone in the library.

“I owe you an apology.”

“For what?”

“For allowing your father to convince me that you didn’t want the company.”

I shook my head.

“You didn’t know.”

“I should have.”

She handed me another envelope.

“This is Elena’s final letter.”

My hands trembled.

I opened it.

It wasn’t addressed to Grandma.

It was addressed to Lily.

My sweet Lily,

I couldn’t read the next line.

My vision blurred.

Grandma gently touched my shoulder.

“Take your time.”

The letter explained that Elena knew she might not live long enough to see Lily grow up.

She wrote about her hopes for her daughter.

She wrote that Lily should never measure herself by money.

Then came the final paragraph.

“If you ever wonder why your father fought so hard to protect you, remember that he chose you when everyone else chose money.”

I broke down.

For the first time since Elena’s death, I allowed myself to cry in front of someone.

Grandma held me.

Then she said:

“There is one more thing.”

I looked up.

“What?”

“Your father wasn’t the only person involved.”

My stomach tightened.

“Who else?”

Grandma slid a photograph across the desk.

It showed Vanessa entering the company archives late at night.

The date was three months before Elena died.

I stared at the photograph.

“Why was she there?”

Grandma’s answer was quiet.

“That’s what we’re going to find out.”

PART 6 — VANESSA’S SECRET

Vanessa arrived at Grandma’s house the next morning.

She looked exhausted.

No designer confidence.

No champagne.

No laughter.

Just fear.

“I want to talk.”

I crossed my arms.

“About what?”

She looked at Grandma.

“Alone.”

Grandma shook her head.

“Whatever you have to say can be said here.”

Vanessa sat down.

For several seconds she said nothing.

Then she whispered:

“I didn’t know everything Dad was doing.”

I believed that she was telling part of the truth.

“How much did you know?”

She looked at me.

“I knew money was being moved.”

“How much?”

“I don’t know.”

“Millions.”

She began crying.

“I thought it was temporary.”

Grandma asked:

“Why did you participate?”

Vanessa covered her face.

“Because I was afraid.”

“Of your father?”

She nodded.

“He told me that if I didn’t cooperate, I’d lose everything.”

I stared at her.

“You helped him?”

“Yes.”

The room went silent.

She explained that my father had used her husband as an intermediary.

Money moved through businesses connected to them.

Vanessa received expensive gifts.

Cars.

Travel.

Jewelry.

But she claimed she never understood how much money was involved.

Then I asked:

“What about Elena?”

Vanessa looked down.

“What about her?”

“Why was she in the archives?”

Vanessa started crying harder.

“She found the records.”

“What did she do?”

“She confronted Dad.”

“And?”

“I don’t know what happened after that.”

Grandma’s expression became severe.

“You do know.”

Vanessa shook her head.

“I swear.”

Then she reached into her purse.

She pulled out a flash drive.

“This is everything I have.”

I took it.

“What’s on it?”

“Messages.”

Between whom?

“Dad and his attorney.”

My heart stopped.

“Why are you giving it to me?”

She looked at Lily, who was sitting beside me.

“Because last night I realized something.”

“What?”

“I spent years trying to become the person my father wanted me to be.”

She wiped her tears.

“And I became someone my niece was afraid of.”

Lily looked at her.

Vanessa couldn’t meet her eyes.

“I am sorry.”

Lily said nothing.

She simply moved closer to me.

That hurt Vanessa more than any accusation could have.

We gave the flash drive to the attorney.

The messages confirmed several financial transfers.

But there was one message that changed everything.

It was sent by my father two days after Elena’s final confrontation.

“The problem has been handled. The documents are secure.”

The attorney stared at the screen.

“What does ‘handled’ mean?”

I asked.

“We don’t know.”

And that was the terrifying part.

We had evidence of financial wrongdoing.

We had evidence of threats.

We had evidence that Elena had been investigating him.

But we still didn’t know what happened during those final days.

Then the attorney found a deleted file.

It contained a photograph.

A hospital document.

My wife’s name.

And a date.

The day before she died.

I stared at it.

“What is that?”

The attorney zoomed in.

And my blood ran cold.

Because the document showed that someone had visited Elena in the hospital.

Someone who had claimed to be a relative.

Someone whose name wasn’t on the approved visitor list.

The name was:

Vanessa.
