We didn’t go to the police immediately.
Instead, Detective Hale helped us create a controlled operation.
The plan was simple.
We would make Selina believe I had lost my memory.
Flynn would tell her the recording was gone.
And Selina would come for the Northstar documents.
I hated every second of it.
But I wanted the truth.
Three days later, Flynn called Selina.
I listened through a hidden microphone.
“I don’t think Mabel remembers.”
Selina laughed.
“She doesn’t?”
“No.”
“Then you need to get the documents.”
“What about the recording?”
“Gone.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.”
There was silence.
Then Selina said:
“Good.”
My hands clenched.
Flynn continued.
“When can you meet?”
“Tonight.”
“Where?”
“Your father’s old warehouse.”
The call ended.
Detective Hale looked at me.
“You’re sure?”
I nodded.
That night, I stayed hidden nearby.
Selina arrived first.
Then Evelyn Cole.
I had never met her face-to-face.
She looked elegant.
Calm.
Almost maternal.
Flynn arrived five minutes later.
Evelyn smiled.
“You finally brought the documents.”
Flynn said nothing.
Selina looked around.
“Where is Mabel?”
“She’s home.”
“Good.”
Evelyn opened her purse.
“Once Northstar is transferred, everything ends.”
Flynn stared at her.
“You promised she wouldn’t be harmed.”
Evelyn’s expression changed.
“Things changed.”
“You said the attack would scare her.”
“It was supposed to.”
Flynn stepped backward.
“You said she would survive.”
Selina laughed.
“You’re suddenly concerned?”
Flynn looked at her.
“You knew she was pregnant.”
“Yes.”
“And you knew about the twins.”
“Yes.”
His voice broke.
“Why?”
Evelyn answered.
“Because a grieving husband is easier to control than a husband with a happy family.”
I heard enough.
Detective Hale signaled.
The officers moved.
The warehouse doors burst open.
Selina screamed.
Evelyn tried to run.
Flynn dropped to his knees.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Then Selina pointed at Flynn.
“He did everything!”
Flynn looked at her.
“No.”
His voice was steady.
“I did terrible things.”
He looked toward me.
“But not all of them.”
Selina froze.
Because she hadn’t known I was there.
I stepped forward.
“You should have checked whether I remembered.”
Her face drained of color.
“Mabel.”
“Yes.”
She backed away.
“You don’t understand.”
“I understand everything.”
I held up the smartwatch.
“The recording survived.”
Selina’s expression collapsed.
Evelyn stared at her daughter.
“You told me it was gone.”
Selina turned.
“You said you handled it!”
The two women began blaming each other.
Detective Hale read them their rights.
Flynn remained standing in the middle of the warehouse.
He looked at me.
“I’ll cooperate.”
I nodded.
“Good.”
That night, the entire financial scheme began unraveling.
The forty-seven million dollars were traced.
Shell companies were identified.
Bank accounts were frozen.
Vance Global’s board suspended Flynn.
And the Northstar property was placed under court protection.
But there was still one unanswered question.
Who had sent me the first anonymous video?
The answer came two days later.
Detective Hale showed me security footage.
A man had entered my father’s old office shortly before my father died.
The man turned toward the camera.
I recognized him.
Harold Bennett.
My father’s attorney.
I stared at the screen.
“No.”
Detective Hale nodded.
“Harold wasn’t helping your father.”
“He was?”
“He was helping Evelyn.”
My blood went cold.
The man I trusted had been part of it.
And suddenly the entire story became even darker.
PART 8 — MY FATHER’S LAST SECRET
Harold was arrested that morning.
He denied everything.
Then Detective Hale showed him the evidence.
His denial lasted six minutes.
After that, he confessed.
Harold had forged documents years earlier.
He had secretly created shell companies.
He had helped Evelyn access Northstar information.
But there was something he said that stunned me.
“Your father knew.”
I stared at him.
“Knew what?”
“He knew I was working with Evelyn.”
“Then why didn’t he stop you?”
“Because he was trying to protect you.”
“How?”
“He created a second trust.”
My heart stopped.
“What second trust?”
Harold explained that my father had anticipated an attempt to take Northstar.
He had created a hidden legal structure.
The property wasn’t simply protected.
It was completely insulated from my personal debts, my marriage, and corporate claims.
Flynn could never legally own it.
Neither could Selina.
Neither could Evelyn.
My father had built the protection specifically for me.
But then Harold said something else.
“Your father also recorded a message.”
“Where?”
“In the family house.”
I returned there with Detective Hale.
The house had been empty for years.
In my father’s study, we searched every drawer.
Finally, we found a hidden compartment behind a bookshelf.
Inside was a small cassette recorder.
I pressed play.
My father’s voice filled the room.
“Mabel.”
I closed my eyes.
“If you’re hearing this, then the people I feared have probably found you.”
His voice trembled.
“I need you to understand something.”
A pause.
“I never cared about the money.”
He explained that Northstar could make the family extraordinarily wealthy.
But the reason he protected it was because he knew corporations were already fighting over the land.
Then he said the sentence that changed my life.
“I did not leave Northstar to make you rich.”
I opened my eyes.
“I left it so you would never have to depend on anyone.”
Tears filled my eyes.
My father knew.
He knew I would sacrifice myself for someone I loved.
He knew I would give everything away.
So he had built something nobody could take.
Then the recording continued.
“Your husband may one day tell you he loves you.”
I froze.
“If that happens, judge him by what he does when he thinks you have nothing.”
The recording ended.
I couldn’t move.
Detective Hale stood silently beside me.
For the first time, I understood my father’s warning.
Flynn had shown me exactly who he was.
Not when we were happy.
Not when I had money.
But when he believed I was powerless.
Weeks passed.
The investigation became national news.
Vance Global’s board removed Flynn as CEO.
Selina was charged with multiple financial crimes.
Evelyn faced additional charges.
Harold agreed to cooperate.
And Flynn…
Flynn pleaded guilty to several offenses related to the financial conspiracy.
But his case involving the attack on me was still pending.
He wrote me letters.
I never opened them.
Until one day, Rachel brought me one.
“You don’t have to read it.”
I stared at the envelope.
Then opened it.
Flynn wrote:
Mabel,
I don’t expect forgiveness.
I don’t deserve it.
I spent years believing power meant never being vulnerable.
Then I became exactly the kind of man I once hated.
I cannot undo what happened.
I cannot bring back our children.
That sentence made me stop reading.
Then I continued.
But I can tell the truth.
I betrayed you.
I believed Selina.
I let fear control me.
And when you needed me most, I became your greatest danger.
At the bottom was one final sentence.
I’m sorry.
I folded the letter.
Then I put it away.
Not because I forgave him.
Because I didn’t need his apology anymore.
I had my father’s truth.
I had the evidence.
I had my life.
And for the first time in years…
I had myself.
