PART 8 — ELAINE’S CONFESSION We returned to Elaine’s house. She didn’t deny it. She simply sat at her kitchen table with both hands wrapped around a cup of untouched tea.

“I wrote the letters,” she said.

Daniel looked devastated.

“Why?”

“Because I was afraid.”

“Of what?”

“My husband.”

“He was dead.”

“He wasn’t always dead.”

Daniel stared.

Elaine explained that Charles had threatened everyone who knew about Sarah.

He wanted the baby hidden.

He wanted Daniel to marry someone else.

He believed Sarah was ruining Daniel’s future.

Elaine had obeyed because she was terrified.

But she never wanted Sarah dead.

“I went to the hospital that night,” she whispered.

My heart stopped.

“What happened?”

“I begged Sarah to leave.”

“Why?”

“Because Charles had sent someone.”

“Who?”

Elaine looked at Michael.

“My husband’s attorney.”

Michael nodded.

“He was there.”

“What did he want?”

“To take Leo.”

I felt sick.

“He wanted to take my grandson?”

“Yes.”

“But Sarah died.”

Elaine began crying.

“She refused to give him the baby.”

“What happened?”

“Her condition became worse.”

“Did anyone hurt her?”

“No.”

Elaine shook her head.

“The doctors tried everything.”

“So Sarah’s death wasn’t caused by them?”

“No.”

“Then why did she write that someone was trying to help her?”

Elaine looked at me.

“Because she didn’t trust me.”

I understood.

Sarah had been surrounded by people who claimed they were protecting her.

But every one of them had secrets.

Elaine reached into a cabinet.

She pulled out a small box.

“This belongs to Leo.”

Inside was a tiny hospital bracelet.

The name read:

Baby Boy Bennett.

I touched it.

My grandson’s first identification.

Elaine whispered:

“Sarah gave it to me.”

“Why?”

“She told me that if she died, I had to make sure Daniel eventually knew.”

“Then why didn’t you?”

“Because I was afraid.”

“You keep saying that.”

“I was a coward.”

Daniel stood.

“You stole ten years from me.”

Elaine nodded.

“I know.”

“You stole ten years from my son.”

She cried.

“I know.”

Daniel’s anger finally broke.

He walked outside.

I followed him.

He stood beneath an old maple tree.

“I missed everything,” he whispered.

“His first word.”

“Yes.”

“His first day of school.”

“Yes.”

“His birthdays.”

“Yes.”

“You missed ten years.”

“I know.”

He turned toward me.

“Can I still be his father?”

I didn’t answer immediately.

Then I said:

“You can’t get the ten years back.”

His face fell.

“But you can choose what you do with the next ten.”

He nodded.

That evening, Daniel sat with Leo.

He didn’t pretend to be his father.

He simply told him the truth.

“I knew your mother.”

Leo listened.

“She loved you.”

“I know.”

“She wanted me to know you.”

“Why didn’t you?”

“I didn’t know you existed.”

Leo looked at him.

“Are you going to leave?”

Daniel’s eyes filled with tears.

“No.”

Leo looked down.

“Everybody leaves.”

Daniel slowly sat beside him.

“I can’t change what happened.”

“No.”

“But I can stay now.”

Leo was silent.

Then he asked:

“Can I call you Dad?”

Daniel broke down.

“I’d like that.”

I left them alone.

For the first time in ten years, Leo wasn’t missing his father.

He was beginning to know him.

But our story wasn’t over.

Because the next morning, I received a letter.

There was no return address.

Only four words on the front.

You don’t know everything.

Inside was one photograph.

It showed Sarah.

Alive.

Standing outside the hospital.

And beside her was a woman I had never seen before.

On the back was written:

Sarah had another secret.
