What was the name of Donald Trump’s father?

A quiz keeps circulating online with a living-room photo of two men hugging. The question looks simple: What is the name of Donald Trump’s father? The four answers are Robert Trump, John Trump, William Trump and Fred Trump. A lot of people pick the wrong one, because the Trump family tree is crowded with similar first names and several generations of men who built, managed or inherited the same real-estate machine.

The photo itself is part of the trap. It shows a younger man with the familiar swept-back hair standing next to an older man with a mustache. Before naming who that older man is, it helps to clear the three names that are not the father.

Option A: Robert Trump

Robert Stewart Trump (1948–2020) was Donald’s younger brother, not his father. He worked inside the family company, later sat on boards, and was often described as the quieter sibling. Donald called him his biggest fan. People mix him up with the father because both men appear in the same family photos from the 1980s and 1990s, often in tuxedos at the same events.

Option B: John Trump

John G. Trump (1907–1985) was Donald’s paternal uncle — Fred’s younger brother. He was an electrical engineer and physicist, taught at MIT, worked on high-voltage X-ray generators and radar, and after Nikola Tesla’s death was asked to review Tesla’s papers for the government. He received the National Medal of Science. He was never a real-estate developer and never Donald’s father. The shared surname and the fact that he was a prominent “Dr. Trump” in mid-century America is why the name shows up in quizzes.

Option C: William Trump

There is no close relative named William who fathered Donald. Distant people with that name exist in other Trump family lines, and Fred Trump III later had a son named William, but none of them is Donald’s father. This option is the distractor that catches people who are guessing from memory.

The family the quiz is actually about

The Trump fortune did not start with Donald. His grandfather, Friedrich Trump, left the German village of Kallstadt in 1885, made money in the Klondike serving miners, and later returned to New York. Friedrich died in the 1918 flu pandemic. His son — born in the Bronx on 11 October 1905 — took over the small building business and turned it into a large rental-apartment empire in Brooklyn and Queens. That son married Mary Anne MacLeod, a Scottish immigrant. They had five children: Maryanne, Fred Jr., Elizabeth, Donald (born 1946) and Robert.

The older man in the viral hug photo is that builder. He was known for plain brick towers for the middle class, for keeping tight control of costs, and for pushing his sons hard. Donald later wrote that his father was the most important influence on him and kept a photo of him in both Trump Tower and the White House. Fred died in 1999 at 93.

So which box is correct?

The man Donald is hugging in the quiz picture, the man who built the original Trump Organization, and the man whose full name was Frederick Christ Trump is Fred Trump. The right answer is D.

The other three names belong to a brother, an uncle and a non-existent close relative. The quiz works because the family reused first names and because so many Trumps stood next to Donald in public photographs. Once you separate the generations, the picture stops being a puzzle.
