PART 6 — THE RECORDING Suddenly, the first officer’s radio crackled.

“Unit Twelve, respond.”

He reached for it.

Victoria raised her hand.

“Don’t.”

The radio crackled again.

Then a voice spoke.

“Officer Harris, confirm the woman is detained.”

The first officer froze.

Victoria looked at him.

“Answer.”

He hesitated.

Then pressed the button.

“She’s detained.”

The voice replied:

“Good. Bring her to the old evidence warehouse.”

Victoria’s eyes narrowed.

The second officer looked confused.

“The old warehouse?”

The voice continued.

“Do not bring her to headquarters.”

Victoria understood immediately.

Someone was giving them illegal instructions.

Someone wanted her taken somewhere without cameras, supervisors, or witnesses.

She reached into her jacket and removed a tiny recorder.

The first officer stared.

“You recorded that?”

Victoria nodded.

“Every word.”

The voice on the radio suddenly changed.

“Wait.”

A pause.

Then:

“Who is with you?”

Neither officer answered.

The voice became aggressive.

“Who is with you?”

Victoria stepped toward the patrol car.

“Me.”

Silence.

Then the radio went dead.

The second officer whispered:

“They know you’re here.”

Victoria looked at him.

“They knew before you stopped me.”
