“I didn’t know.”
Victoria looked at him.
“Didn’t know what?”
“I didn’t know who you were.”
“I believe you.”
He looked surprised.
“You do?”
“Yes.”
The second officer stared at his partner.
“Don’t say anything.”
Victoria immediately turned toward him.
“Why?”
He didn’t answer.
“Why shouldn’t he talk?”
The second officer’s hands began trembling.
Finally, he whispered:
“They have my family.”
Victoria’s expression changed.
“Who?”
“Hale’s people.”
He explained everything.
Six months earlier, his brother had been arrested after refusing to cooperate with Hale’s organization.
The charges had mysteriously disappeared.
But the family had been threatened.
Then the officer was ordered to follow instructions.
He wasn’t a mastermind.
He was scared.
Victoria looked at him for several seconds.
“Why didn’t you report it?”
“Because the last officer who tried disappeared.”
Victoria went silent.
Then she opened her folder again.
She pulled out one final photograph.
“Is this the officer?”
The man stared at the picture.
His eyes filled with tears.
“Yes.”
Victoria turned the photograph over.
On the back was a date.
And beneath the date was a handwritten message.
HE IS ALIVE.
The second officer nearly collapsed.
“What?”
Victoria looked at him.
“He’s alive.”
“Where?”
“That’s what we’re going to find out.”
