He locked the door.
Then he told me the story my mother had spent thirty years hiding.
The Aranda family had built its fortune through legitimate construction businesses.
But Arthur Aranda had secretly created another network.
Shell companies.
Fake charities.
Offshore accounts.
Money moved through corporations nobody could trace.
My father, Robert, had been hired as an accountant.
At first, he didn’t know.
Then he discovered the numbers.
Millions were disappearing.
He confronted Arthur.
Arthur threatened him.
Robert copied everything.
And Mariana helped him escape.
But they couldn’t simply disappear.
Because Mariana was pregnant.
With me.
Arthur discovered my existence.
That was when the family hunt began.
My parents fled Chicago.
They changed names.
They moved constantly.
Eventually they settled in Austin.
My father became a mechanic.
My mother became Theresa Lopez.
And I became Elena Lopez.
A nobody.
Exactly what they wanted the world to believe.
“Then where did the $18 million come from?” I asked.
Daniel looked at me.
“Your mother was returning stolen money.”
I frowned.
“What?”
“She spent thirty years collecting evidence and moving the assets into protected accounts.”
The money wasn’t simply hers.
It was connected to the assets Arthur had tried to hide.
My mother had been building a legal case.
Then Daniel handed me the flash drive.
“Your mother believed this contained the final evidence.”
I plugged it into a secure computer.
Folders appeared.
Names.
Dates.
Bank transfers.
Photographs.
Contracts.
Then I saw something that made my stomach turn.
A folder labeled:
PROJECT MARCH 17.
Inside was a video.
My mother appeared on screen.
She looked tired.
Older.
But her eyes were clear.
“Hello, Elena.”
I started crying immediately.
“If you’re watching this, I didn’t survive long enough to tell you everything.”
She paused.
“I need you to understand something.
Your father did not die from a heart attack.”
My entire body went numb.
“He was poisoned.”
Daniel lowered his head.
Mom continued.
“Robert discovered that someone inside our family was helping Arthur.”
Then she said a name.
Patricia’s father.
Patricia immediately began crying.
“That isn’t possible.”
Daniel turned toward her.
“It is.”
Patricia shook her head.
“My father died before I was married.”
“He died knowing what he had done.”
Roger looked at his wife.
“You knew?”
“I didn’t!”
But Mom wasn’t finished.
“There is one person you must never trust.”
She looked directly into the camera.
“Roger.”
My brother stumbled backward.
I stared at him.
Mom continued.
“Not because he is evil.
Because he has been manipulated since he was a child.”
Roger covered his face.
“I was seventeen,” he whispered.
I turned toward him.
“What happened?”
He finally confessed.
Arthur had found him years earlier.
He told Roger that our mother had stolen the family’s fortune.
He showed Roger fake documents.
He convinced him that Elena was the favorite child because Mom planned to give everything to me.
Roger believed him.
Arthur promised Roger money if he recovered the missing documents.
“But you were looking for the folder,” I said.
Roger nodded.
“I thought Mom had hidden proof that she stole everything.”
“And Patricia?”
He looked at her.
Patricia was crying.
“She knew about Arthur too.”
I felt betrayed all over again.
Then the video ended.
A final message appeared on the screen.
“Elena, the evidence isn’t the most important thing.”
A second line appeared.
“The real inheritance is hidden where your father died.”
Daniel suddenly stood.
“Where was Robert buried?”
I answered.
“South Austin.”
Daniel shook his head.
“No.”
He looked at the screen.
“Your father wasn’t buried where you think.”
My heart stopped.
“What do you mean?”
Daniel pointed to another file.
ROBERT LOPEZ — FINAL LOCATION.
I opened it.
There was an address.
An abandoned repair garage.
My father’s old workplace.
And beneath the address were four words:
“He left something there.”
Then the bank’s security alarm began screaming.
Someone had entered the building.
Daniel looked at me.
“They found us.”
