PART 5 — WHAT MY FATHER LEFT BEHIND We escaped through the underground parking garage.

Daniel drove.

I sat beside him.

Roger and Patricia followed in another vehicle.

Nobody spoke.

When we reached the abandoned garage, the place looked exactly as I remembered it from childhood.

Rusty doors.

Broken windows.

Old tires stacked against the wall.

The smell of oil still seemed trapped inside.

My father had spent years there.

I remembered sitting on a wooden stool while he repaired engines.

He used to tell me:

“Every machine leaves clues, Elena.”

I had never understood what he meant.

Daniel searched the office.

Nothing.

Then I noticed the old radio on my father’s desk.

It was the same kind he used to repair at home.

I picked it up.

There was a loose panel underneath.

Inside was a tiny cassette.

My hands began shaking.

We found an old player.

The tape crackled.

Then my father’s voice filled the room.

“If Elena is hearing this, then Mariana didn’t make it.”

I closed my eyes.

“I need you to know the truth.”

He explained that the Aranda family had stolen billions over decades.

But the $18.7 million wasn’t the biggest amount.

It was the money he had recovered legally.

He had placed it in accounts that could only be accessed after Mariana’s death.

It was intended for me.

Not because I was an Aranda.

Because I was his daughter.

He wanted me to have a life untouched by the family’s corruption.

Then came the revelation.

Arthur wasn’t the mastermind.

He had been protecting someone else.

Someone higher.

Someone who had helped hide the money through government contracts.

A man whose name appeared repeatedly in the files.

Senator Victor Hale.

A powerful politician.

And Patricia’s father had worked directly for him.

The tape continued.

“If anything happens to me, don’t trust anyone claiming they are trying to protect you.”

My father paused.

“Except Daniel.”

Daniel looked down.

Then my father’s voice softened.

“Elena, your mother loves you more than anything in this world.”

The tape ended.

I was crying.

But before anyone could speak, headlights appeared outside.

Three black SUVs.

Daniel immediately locked the doors.

“They’re here.”

Roger looked terrified.

“What do we do?”

I looked at him.

“For once, Roger, you tell me the truth.”

He swallowed.

“I can help.”

“Then prove it.”

Roger pulled out his phone.

He showed me messages from an unknown number.

Instructions.

Payments.

Threats.

And one message that had been sent the day before Mom died.

“Your mother will be quiet soon. Find the documents before Elena does.”

The sender was hidden.

But one attachment remained.

A photograph.

Arthur Aranda.

Senator Victor Hale.

And a third man.

I recognized him.

The man who had followed us from the bank.

Daniel whispered:

“That’s Marcus Vale.”

“Who is he?”

“Arthur’s private security chief.”

The garage door began shaking.

Someone was trying to force it open.

Then Patricia suddenly stepped forward.

“I know another way out.”

We followed her through a storage room.

Behind a false wall was a narrow tunnel.

It led to an alley.

We escaped seconds before the garage door collapsed.

Outside, Daniel stopped.

“Where are we going?”

I held up the flash drive.

“To the police.”

Daniel shook his head.

“Some of them are compromised.”

“Then the FBI.”

“Better.”

We drove toward the federal building.

But halfway there, my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A man’s voice said:

“You’re making a mistake, Elena.”

“Who are you?”

“You don’t want to know.”

“I already know enough.”

The man laughed.

“You think your mother was protecting you?”

I said nothing.

“She wasn’t protecting you from us.”

He paused.

“She was protecting you from the truth.”

Then the call ended.

I looked at Daniel.

“What truth?”

He didn’t answer.

Then I noticed the photograph from the garage.

There were three people.

Arthur.

Victor Hale.

And Marcus.

But behind them stood another person.

A woman.

I zoomed in.

My breath caught.

It was my mother.

And she wasn’t standing beside them as a victim.

She was holding a folder.

Talking to them.

As if she had been part of the meeting.

I stared at Daniel.

“Why was my mother meeting them?”

He whispered:

“Because there is one thing she never told you.”
