PART 6 — MY MOTHER’S BIGGEST LIE The FBI agent who met us didn’t believe everything immediately.

But once Daniel showed the documents, the atmosphere changed.

They secured the flash drive.

They copied the files.

Then they asked me one question.

“Do you know where your mother kept the original evidence?”

“No.”

The agent looked at me.

“Then you need to remember everything she ever told you.”

I thought about it.

The brown blanket.

The tamales.

The leaking roof.

The golden key.

March 17.

Then I remembered something else.

Every March 17, Mom disappeared for exactly three hours.

She always told me she was visiting an old friend.

I never questioned her.

But now I knew.

She wasn’t visiting a friend.

She was meeting someone.

Daniel confirmed it.

“Your mother had a secret apartment.”

“What?”

“She rented it under another name.”

We found the address.

A small apartment complex on the east side of Austin.

Inside the apartment was almost nothing.

One bed.

One table.

A suitcase.

And hundreds of handwritten pages.

The first page said:

“For Elena, when she is old enough to understand.”

I sat down.

The first truth was about my birth.

The second was about my father.

The third was about Roger.

But the fourth changed everything.

Mom admitted she had deliberately kept Roger away from the family secret.

She wanted him to hate her.

She believed resentment would keep him safe.

It had failed.

Then came the biggest confession.

My mother had not inherited the $18.7 million.

She had earned it.

For thirty years, she had secretly invested money recovered from abandoned Aranda accounts.

She had built legitimate businesses under different names.

She had quietly accumulated wealth.

And she had used that money to help people who had been harmed by the Aranda organization.

She wasn’t poor.

She was pretending to be poor.

Because Arthur’s people were watching her.

If she lived like a wealthy woman, they would have found her.

So she lived like Doña Tere.

She sold tamales.

Collected bottles.

Wore old clothes.

Complained about the price of bread.

And fooled everyone.

Including me.

I cried harder than I had at her funeral.

Then I found a final envelope.

It contained a letter from Arthur.

It had been written years earlier.

Arthur claimed he wanted peace.

But Mom had written beneath it:

“He is lying.”

The final page said:

“Arthur isn’t the one who frightens me anymore.

Victor Hale is.

Arthur built the machine.

Victor learned how to control it.

And Marcus knows where all the bodies are buried.”

I stared at those words.

Then I realized something.

Mom had never meant literal bodies.

She meant secrets.

Evidence.

People who had disappeared.

Then the FBI agent entered.

“We have a problem.”

“What?”

“Senator Hale just announced a press conference.”

“About what?”

The agent handed me a tablet.

The headline read:

“BILLIONAIRE ARANDA HEIR FOUND DEAD; FAMILY DISPUTE EXPECTED TO ESCALATE.”

I stared at the screen.

Arthur Aranda was dead.

He had apparently died that morning.

But beneath the headline was another statement.

The Aranda family had accused my mother of stealing millions.

They were preparing to blame her for the entire financial scandal.

Even though she was dead.

Then the agent said:

“And they’ve named you as the primary beneficiary.”

I looked at him.

“What?”

“If your mother was legally Mariana Aranda, the fortune could belong to you.”

Suddenly I understood.

They weren’t trying to kill me because I knew the truth.

They wanted me alive.

They wanted me to inherit everything.

Then they wanted to control me.

The agent continued.

“There is one more problem.”

“What?”

“Senator Hale has requested a court hearing tomorrow.”

“For what?”

“To freeze the entire estate.”

I stood.

“Then we go to court.”

Daniel stared at me.

“You’ll be walking into a trap.”

I looked at my mother’s photograph.

“No.”

I said quietly:

“I’m walking into the room where my mother should have been allowed to tell the truth.”
