PART 2
For several seconds, the house was completely silent.
Then the lights came back on.
Victoria was gone.
So was the folder.
I ran outside with Maya.
“Where did she go?”
“I don’t know.”
But something didn’t make sense.
If Victoria wanted me to stay away from Daniel, why had she shown me the documents?
Maya suddenly pointed toward the road.
A black car was leaving the driveway.
I recognized it immediately.
Daniel’s car.
He had followed us.
My phone rang.
Daniel.
I answered.
“Where are you?”
There was a long silence.
Then he said quietly,
“Claire, please come back to the hotel.”
“Did you know about the house?”
Another silence.
“That isn’t what you think.”
“Did you sign a marriage agreement using my name?”
His voice changed.
“No.”
“Then who did?”
He didn’t answer.
That was when I understood.
The person I needed to fear wasn’t Daniel.
It was whoever had access to his family’s documents.
We returned to the hotel.
Two hundred guests were already seated.
The ceremony was scheduled to begin in ten minutes.
Victoria was standing beside Daniel’s mother, smiling as if nothing had happened.
Daniel walked toward me.
“Claire, I can explain.”
I held up the photograph.
“Then explain this.”
His face went pale.
He looked at his mother.
Then at Victoria.
Finally, he looked at me.
“My father discovered something about the family trust six months ago,” he whispered. “He wanted to expose it.”
“Expose what?”
Daniel swallowed.
“That my mother and Victoria had been moving money through companies that didn’t exist.”
I stared at him.
“And the marriage agreement?”
“They created it to make it look like you were involved.”
My heart sank.
“Why me?”
Daniel reached into his jacket and pulled out a small envelope.
“Because you’re the only person my father trusted to find the missing money.”
Inside was a handwritten letter from his father.
It explained everything.
The strange bank transfers.
The fake companies.
The forged documents.
And one final instruction:
“Do not marry until Claire knows the truth.”
I looked at Daniel.
“You knew?”
“I suspected. I was trying to protect you.”
Behind him, his mother suddenly stepped forward.
“You’re not going to ruin this family over paperwork.”
I looked around the room.
Two hundred people were waiting.
Then I walked to the microphone.
Everyone became silent.
I placed the forged marriage agreement on the table.
“I came here today expecting to marry Daniel.”
Victoria’s smile disappeared.
“But I discovered that someone forged my name, manipulated a family trust, and tried to make me part of a financial crime.”
The room erupted in whispers.
Then the hotel doors opened.
Two investigators walked inside.
I had called them before returning to the ceremony.
Daniel’s mother stared at me.
“You wouldn’t dare.”
I looked directly at her.
“I already did.”
Daniel stepped beside me.
And instead of saying the vows everyone expected…
he turned to me and whispered:
“Now we can finally tell them why I chose you.”
That was when the second envelope appeared.
And this one had my mother’s name written on it.
