The Call My Mother Made Before the Plane Landed — Part 4

I didn’t sleep that night.

At 3:17 a.m., my mother sent another message.

I have the evidence.

A photograph followed.

An old photograph of my father standing beside Robert.

Both men were smiling.

Behind them was a warehouse.

I recognized the building.

It belonged to my company.

But the photograph was twenty-eight years old.

My company didn’t exist then.

I called my lawyer.

She answered half-asleep.

“What’s wrong?”

I sent her the photograph.

She became silent.

“Where did you get this?”

“My mother.”

“Don’t contact anyone else.”

“Why?”

“Because that warehouse was part of a company Robert owned before your father died.”

“What does that mean?”

“It means your company may have been built on assets you inherited without knowing it.”

My mind raced.

“My father left me something?”

“Possibly.”

I opened an old file my mother had sent.

There was a handwritten note from my father.

Only three sentences.

Andrea,

If you ever find this, don’t trust Robert.

Everything I built belongs to you.

I covered my mouth.

For years, I thought I had built my company from nothing.

Maybe I hadn’t.

Maybe my father had left me the foundation.

Maybe Robert had spent decades trying to take it back.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A man’s voice said:

“Your father wasn’t killed by Robert.”

I froze.

“Who are you?”

“You don’t know me.”

“Then why are you calling?”

“Because your father saved my life.”

I stood up.

“What happened to him?”

“He discovered a money-laundering operation.”

My heart pounded.

“Who was involved?”

“Robert.”

I looked at Lucy.

She was still asleep.

The stranger continued.

“But Robert wasn’t the person in charge.”

“Who was?”

Silence.

Then:

“Your mother.”

I felt like the floor disappeared.

“No.”

“She organized the transfers.”

“No.”

“She used your father’s name.”

“No.”

“And when your father threatened to expose her…”

The line went silent.

“What happened?”

The stranger whispered:

“He was forced off the road.”

I couldn’t breathe.

“Are you saying my mother killed my father?”

“I am saying your mother knows who did.”

The call ended.

I stood there for several minutes.

Then Lucy woke up.

“Mom?”

I turned toward her.

She smiled sleepily.

“Did Grandma call?”

I didn’t answer.

Because for the first time, I wasn’t sure whether my mother was the victim…

or the person who had been behind everything from the beginning.
