Part 5 — The Secret Elena Kept

We went to the bank.

The account manager pulled up the records.

“There is one authorized person besides Elena.”

“Who?”

She turned the screen toward me.

My heart stopped.

My father.

But my father had died seven years earlier.

“That can’t be possible.”

The manager checked the original paperwork.

Then she found a handwritten note.

My father had opened the account before his death.

He had instructed the bank to transfer money into it whenever my overseas payments arrived.

But my mother had intercepted most of the transfers.

My father had suspected she would misuse my money.

He had created a safety net for Elena.

And Elena had never known about it.

Then the bank manager handed us one final envelope.

It had been sealed for years.

My father’s handwriting was on the front.

For Daniel, when he finally comes home.

My hands trembled as I opened it.

Inside was a letter.

“My son,

If you’re reading this, something has gone wrong.

Your mother loves you, but she has always protected Marcus from consequences.

I fear that one day she will sacrifice someone innocent to save him.

If that happens, protect your wife.

She is stronger than you realize.

And remember this:

Money can build a house.

It cannot build a family.

Only loyalty can do that.”

I couldn’t speak.

Elena took my hand.

For the first time since returning home, she smiled.

The investigation eventually recovered much of the stolen money.

Marcus was charged with fraud, identity theft, and conspiracy.

My mother faced charges for financial crimes and obstruction.

The doctor lost her license and agreed to cooperate with investigators.

But Elena’s fight was only beginning.

Her treatment started immediately.

Months passed.

Slowly, she gained weight.

Her hair began growing back.

And one morning, she stood in front of the mirror without a hat for the first time.

She touched her short hair and smiled.

“I don’t look like myself.”

I wrapped my arms around her.

“You look stronger.”

She looked at me.

“So do you.”

We eventually sold the house.

Not because we needed the money.

Because neither of us wanted to live surrounded by memories of betrayal.

We bought a small home near the coast.

Nothing extravagant.

Just a little garden, a quiet kitchen, and a bedroom Elena could finally call her own.

One evening, months later, she asked me something.

“Daniel?”

“Yeah?”

“Do you regret coming home early?”

I looked at her.

I thought about the money.

The lies.

The stolen years.

The hospital.

The storage room.

Then I smiled.

“No.”

She leaned against my shoulder.

“Why?”

“Because if I hadn’t come home that day, I might have lost you forever.”

She squeezed my hand.

And for the first time in five years, I knew exactly where every dollar I had earned had gone.

Not into a mansion.

Not into a luxury car.

Not into someone else’s pockets.

It had gone toward finding the truth.

And the truth had given me something money never could.

A second chance with the woman who never stopped waiting for me.
