Harold looked up.

“They know we’re down here.”

A second later, dirt and rust drifted from the ceiling.

The hatch slammed shut with tremendous force.

Then came the unmistakable sound of heavy chains being wrapped around the outside.

Mercer ran toward the stairs.

He shoved against the hatch with both hands.

It didn’t move.

He pushed again.

Nothing.

He looked back at us.

“We’re locked in.”

A muffled voice drifted down through the iron door above.

Calm.

Confident.

Almost amused.

“Richard…”

Dad froze.

He knew that voice.

Very slowly, he looked up toward the ceiling.

The man above laughed once before speaking again.

“You’ve been looking for your brother.”

A long pause followed.

“Now…”

The laughter grew colder.

“…I’ve found both of you.”

PART 19: THE VOICE ABOVE THE HATCH

No one answered.

The voice above us didn’t need a reply.

Whoever he was, he already knew exactly where we were.

Sheriff Mercer pushed against the iron hatch again with all his strength.

The heavy chains rattled.

Nothing else moved.

“They wrapped it from the outside,” he muttered.

“We’re not getting through that.”

Another chuckle drifted down from above.

“I wouldn’t waste your energy, Sheriff.”

Dad slowly stepped toward the center of the room.

“Who are you?”

Silence.

Then the voice replied.

“I wondered how long it would take before you asked.”

“I asked.”

“I know.”

Another pause.

“But I’d rather know something first.”

Dad folded his arms.

“What?”

“Did Thomas finally tell you the truth?”

Every eye turned toward the wooden door.

Behind it…

Thomas said nothing.

The silence itself felt like an answer.

Dad looked at the door.

“Thomas?”

Still nothing.

The man above laughed again.

“See?”

“I told you.”

“Thirty-two years, Richard.”

“Thirty-two years, and he still can’t tell you.”

Dad’s jaw tightened.

“Stop hiding.”

“I’ve spent enough years chasing ghosts.”

The voice became colder.

“I wasn’t the one hiding.”

Dad’s eyes narrowed.

“What do you want?”

“I’ve wanted the same thing since the beginning.”

“The originals.”

Dad didn’t even hesitate.

“You’ll never get them.”

A heavy boot scraped across the iron hatch.

“Oh, Richard…”

“You still think they’re down there.”

A strange expression crossed Dad’s face.

Not fear.

Realization.

“You searched the vault.”

“I searched everything.”

“The cabinets.”

“The desk.”

“The stove.”

“The walls.”

“The floor.”

“And yet…”

The man sighed dramatically.

“…your father fooled us again.”

Dad closed his eyes for a brief moment.

“So that’s why you dug up my mother’s grave.”

No answer came.

Dad looked upward.

“You believed she was buried with the key.”

Another silence.

Then…

“We had to be certain.”

Harold’s fists clenched.

“You desecrated Clara’s grave?”

“You buried the answer with her.”

“No,” Dad said quietly.

“We buried my mother.”

The voice ignored him.

“Your father loved puzzles.”

“He left clues.”

“He left maps.”

“He left riddles.”

“But he never left the truth.”

Evelyn suddenly looked at the survey map spread across the desk.

Her eyes widened.

“Richard…”

He turned.

She pointed to the three blue circles.

“The barn.”

“The spring house.”

“The vault.”

“So?”

“They’re all distractions.”

Dad stared at the map.

His breathing slowed.

Then he smiled.

A genuine smile.

“The compass.”

“What compass?” Mercer asked.

Dad didn’t answer.

Instead, he picked up the faded photograph of his grandparents.

He turned it over once more.

Never sell the south field.

His thumb traced the final word.

“South…”

He whispered.

Then he unfolded the survey map completely across the desk.

For the first time, he ignored the blue circles.

Instead…

He looked at the tiny compass rose printed in the bottom corner.

His smile grew wider.

“Oh…”

Harold frowned.

“What?”

Dad laughed softly.

“Father…”

He shook his head in admiration.

“…you impossible old man.”

Mercer stepped beside him.

“What did you find?”

Dad pointed to the compass.

“This map has been upside down.”

Everyone leaned closer.

He rotated it one hundred eighty degrees.

The circles no longer lined up with the landmarks outside.

Neither did the handwritten word Vault.

It pointed somewhere entirely different.

Not beneath the barn.

Not beneath the south field.

Not even on our property.

It pointed across the creek…

…to the abandoned white church that had stood empty on the neighboring hill for nearly seventy years.

Above us, the man stopped laughing.

The silence lasted only a second.

Then his voice exploded with anger.

“No!”

Dad slowly looked toward the ceiling.

“You just made your first mistake.”

Another pair of hurried footsteps raced across the hatch overhead.

Someone shouted.

Truck doors slammed outside.

Engines roared to life.

They were leaving.

Dad looked at Sheriff Mercer.

“They’re heading for the church.”

Mercer grinned.

“And thanks to him…”

He held up his radio.

“…so are my deputies.”

A burst of static filled the underground chamber.

Then dispatch finally answered.

“Sheriff Mercer, we have your signal. What’s your emergency?”

Dad looked toward the wooden door behind which Thomas still waited.

For the first time all day, hope returned to his face.

“We’re finally one move ahead.”

PART 20: THE CHURCH ON THE HILL

Sheriff Mercer grabbed the radio.

“Dispatch, this is Mercer.”

“I’m trapped beneath the old Miller property with four civilians.”

“I need every available unit at Saint Andrew’s Church.”

The dispatcher answered immediately.

“Units are already en route.”

Mercer frowned.

“What do you mean, already?”

A crackle of static filled the room.

“We received an anonymous call four minutes ago.”

Dad and I looked at each other.

Anonymous.

Thomas spoke through the wooden door.

“That was me.”

Everyone turned toward him.

“You have a phone?” I asked.

“No.”

“Then how—”

“I still have the emergency field radio your father hid down here.”

Dad blinked.

“The old civil defense radio?”

“Yes.”

“I repaired it years ago.”

Dad let out a disbelieving laugh.

“You always could fix anything.”

For a brief moment, the two brothers sounded exactly like children again.

Then reality returned.

Mercer spoke into his radio again.

“Dispatch, do not let anyone enter the church alone.”

“They’re looking for something hidden inside.”

The dispatcher hesitated.

“Too late, Sheriff.”

Mercer’s expression hardened.

“What happened?”

“A maintenance volunteer reported seeing three men force the front doors open less than two minutes ago.”

Dad whispered,

“They’re already there.”

Harold slammed his fist against the stone wall.

“We’re wasting time.”

Mercer looked up at the chained hatch.

“I know.”

Thomas spoke calmly from behind the wooden door.

“You’re using the wrong exit.”

Every head turned.

“The wrong exit?” Dad asked.

“The hatch was never meant to be used during an emergency.”

Dad stared at the door.

“There really is another way.”

“I told you years ago.”

Dad gave a sad smile.

“No…”

“You tried to tell me.”

Thomas’s voice softened.

“But you were too angry to listen.”

Silence settled over the room.

Thirty-two years of regret hung between them.

Finally, Dad walked to the wooden door.

“I’m sorry.”

Nothing happened.

Then Thomas answered quietly.

“So am I.”

A metallic click echoed through the room.

Not from the hatch.

From the wooden door.

The lock slowly turned.

Mercer instinctively reached for his weapon.

Dad gently lowered the sheriff’s arm.

“It’s all right.”

The door opened only a few inches.

A pale hand appeared.

Thin.

Scarred.

Older than Dad’s.

The hand held a heavy brass key.

“The passage hasn’t been opened in years,” Thomas said.

“You’ll need this.”

Dad accepted the key without saying a word.

For several seconds, neither brother let go.

They simply stood there, their hands touching for the first time in thirty-two years.

Dad’s eyes filled with tears.

“Thomas…”

“I know.”

“I’m sorry.”

“I know.”

Dad laughed through the emotion.

“I’ve practiced this conversation thousands of times.”

“So have I.”

Thomas slowly released the key.

“The reunion will have to wait.”

He pointed toward the back wall.

“There.”

Mercer shined his flashlight where Thomas indicated.

At first, all we saw was rough stone.

Then Dad noticed something.

Three stones were slightly lighter than the others.

He inserted the brass key into a tiny hidden keyhole I never would have seen.

The mechanism groaned.

Deep inside the wall, gears began turning.

Stone scraped against stone.

A section of the wall slowly slid sideways.

Cold air rushed into the chamber.

Beyond it stretched a narrow brick tunnel disappearing into darkness.

Harold stared in amazement.

“This was under the farm all along?”

Dad nodded.

“My grandfather built escape routes.”

Mercer aimed his flashlight down the tunnel.

“Where does it lead?”

Thomas answered before Dad could.

“Straight to the basement…”

He paused.

“…of Saint Andrew’s Church.”

Every person in the room froze.

Dad looked toward the hidden passage.

Then back at the wooden door.

“You knew.”

“For years.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Thomas gave a weary laugh.

“Because I was waiting for the day you stopped chasing the inheritance…”

His voice became steady.

“…and started protecting the truth.”

Without another word, Dad stepped into the tunnel.

Mercer followed.

Harold came next.

I took one last look at the wooden door.

It had already closed again.

Thomas remained behind.

Hidden.

Safe.

Or so we hoped.

As the stone wall sealed itself behind us, Dad whispered into the darkness,

“This story never began with my death.”

He tightened his grip on the brass key.

“It began the day my father decided one secret was worth destroying an entire family to protect.”

Far ahead in the tunnel…

A single church bell rang……
