Nobody moved.
The words echoed through the vault.
My mother’s fingers tightened around my arm.
Ernest stared at the steel door.
Officer Caldwell was standing on the other side.
The same officer who had walked through Ernest’s mansion only hours earlier.
The same officer who had taken the threatening note.
The same officer who had asked Ernest about Richard.
And now he was telling us his father was the company attorney my dead father had apparently stopped trusting.
Ernest stepped toward the door.
“How did you find us?”
Silence.
Then Officer Caldwell answered.
“I followed you.”
My stomach dropped.
“You followed us from Kentucky?”
“No.”
“Then from where?”
“From Valerie’s mother’s house.”
Mom looked at me.
Ernest’s expression hardened.
“You had no authority to do that.”
“No.”
At least he admitted it.
“Why?”
“Because when I saw Samuel Harrison’s name on that note last night, I recognized it.”
My heart jumped.
“You knew my father?”
I couldn’t stop myself.
Ernest looked at me sharply.

I looked at Mom.

The footsteps continued toward the stairs.
Then the man called again:

My blood went cold.
“I have something your father wanted you to see.”
Officer Caldwell shouted:
“Stop!”
But the footsteps kept climbing.
The man appeared at the far end of the corridor.
I could only see part of him through the narrow reinforced window in the vault door.
He was elderly.
Tall.
Silver-haired.
Officer Caldwell raised his weapon.
“Hands where I can see them!”
The man slowly raised both hands.
Then Officer Caldwell whispered:
“Dad?”
Peter Caldwell.
Alive.
Standing outside the vault.
He looked through the small window directly at me.
Not Ernest.
Not my mother.
Me.
His expression broke.
“You really do look like Samuel.”
My throat tightened.
“What happened to my father?”
Peter closed his eyes.
When he opened them again, they were wet.
“I didn’t kill him.”
“Then who did?”
Peter looked at Ernest.
And said:
“Ask your husband why Samuel’s truck had Sullivan brake parts installed three days before the crash.”
I turned toward Ernest.
He stopped breathing.
Peter reached slowly into his coat.
Officer Caldwell shouted:
“Don’t!”
Peter froze.

“A repair invoice,” he said.
“Authorized by Ernest Sullivan.”
I stared at the old man I had married.
Ernest looked completely stunned.
“I never authorized repairs on Samuel’s truck.”
Peter gave a bitter smile.
“Your signature says otherwise.”
And for the first time, I realized my father’s missing black notebook might not be the only thing waiting inside B-17.
There might also be proof that the man who married me had unknowingly—or deliberately—helped prepare my father’s truck for the night he died.

PART 10 — THE SIGNATURE THAT SHOULD NOT HAVE EXISTED

“Your signature says otherwise.”
I looked at Ernest.
For several seconds, he didn’t move.
Then he shook his head.
“No.”
Peter Caldwell stood outside the vault while his son kept him at a distance.
The folded repair invoice remained on the floor between them.
“No,” Ernest repeated. “I never authorized work on Samuel’s truck.”
Peter’s expression didn’t change.
“I expected you to say that.”
“Because it’s true.”
“Then perhaps you should look at the paper.”
Officer Caldwell glanced toward the vault.
“I’ll bring it.”
“Don’t touch him,” Peter said.
His son’s expression hardened.
“You don’t give orders here.”
Peter slowly lowered his eyes.
Something passed between father and son.

Maybe both.
Officer Caldwell picked up the invoice and slid it beneath the vault door.

“Fire!”

Smoke thickened.
The old warehouse alarms remained silent.

“There’s another exit.”

A narrow maintenance door appeared.

Then I noticed the black Lincoln.
It was gone.
I looked toward the road.
Nothing.
Peter was staring too.
“Who knew we were here?”
I asked.
Ernest answered:
“Richard knew I owned the warehouse.”
“Peter knew.”
Peter nodded.
“My father’s files mentioned it,” Caldwell said.
“And whoever sent you the November 20 note knew,” Mom added.
Too many people.
Too many secrets.
Then Peter looked at my coat.
“What?”
He pointed.
“Your pocket.”
I looked down.
The B-17 key was partially visible.
Peter’s face changed completely.
“Where did you get that?”
“Dad mailed it to Ernest.”
Peter stepped closer.
“Give it to me.”
“No.”
“Valerie, listen to me.”
Ernest moved between us.
“She said no.”
Peter looked genuinely terrified.
“You don’t understand what that key opens.”
“A storage unit.”
“No.”
My heartbeat stopped.
“What?”
“B-17 was never a storage unit number.”
I stared at him.
“The letter says Unit B-17.”
“Because someone wants you to believe that.”
“Then what is it?”
Peter looked back at the burning warehouse.
“B-17 was Samuel’s designation for something else.”
“What?”
“A bank deposit box.”
My fingers closed around the key.
“Which bank?”
Peter shook his head.
“I don’t know.”
“Then how do you know?”
“Because Samuel told me the night he died.”
“What did he put inside?”
Peter looked directly at me.
“The one document Martin could never allow Ernest Sullivan to see.”
Ernest frowned.
“What document?”
Peter’s voice dropped.
“Samuel’s original partnership agreement.”
Nobody spoke.
I looked at Ernest.
“So?”
He seemed equally confused.
Peter continued.
“The agreement everyone believed Samuel transferred away was not the original.”
Ernest went still.
“What are you saying?”
“I’m saying the transfer Martin filed was incomplete.”
My pulse began racing.
Peter looked at me.
“Your father never legally surrendered everything.”
Ernest’s face emptied of color.
Peter continued:
“Under the original agreement, Samuel retained a protected interest even after the transfer.”
“How much?”
Peter looked straight at me.
“Half.”
I stopped breathing.
Ernest whispered:
“That’s impossible.”
“No.”
Peter shook his head.
“It means when Sullivan Materials was sold for thirty-eight million dollars, Samuel Harrison’s estate may have legally owned fifty percent of it.”
My mother grabbed my arm.
I could barely hear her.
Because one number was already screaming inside my head.
Nineteen million dollars.
Not $1.5 million.
Not a payment for a bride.
Not charity.
If Peter was telling the truth, Ernest hadn’t married a poor girl he intended to make rich.
He had married the daughter of the man whose fortune might have been buried for thirteen years.
