PART 5 — THE FULL VIDEO The police returned later that afternoon.

They had watched the recording from Carla’s friend.

But they had also recovered something else.

The full video.

It had been automatically backed up to the cloud.

Carla had apparently forgotten that deleting something from her phone didn’t necessarily delete the original.

The detective played it for us.

The video showed Lily walking toward the shed.

She was holding the envelope.

Carla followed her.

“Give me that.”

“No.”

“You don’t know what you’re holding.”

“It has Mom’s name on it.”

“Give it to me.”

“I’m giving it to my mom.”

Carla stepped closer.

Then Lily said:

“Grandma told me Mom was supposed to have this.”

Carla froze.

“What did Grandma tell you?”

Lily answered:

“She said my mom was the only one who could fix it.”

Carla became furious.

She grabbed Lily’s arm.

Lily pulled away.

Then Carla picked up the steel skewer.

The detective paused the video.

Nobody spoke.

My mother started crying.

But I didn’t feel sorry for her.

The detective continued.

Carla raised the skewer.

Lily backed away.

“Stop!”

Then Lily screamed.

The video showed exactly what happened.

Carla had deliberately struck her.

The room went silent.

The detective looked at me.

“We have enough evidence to proceed.”

Carla began sobbing.

My father tried to explain.

“She didn’t understand what she was doing.”

The detective looked at him.

“She understood enough to threaten a nine-year-old.”

Then he turned toward my mother.

“And you told the child she deserved it.”

My mother lowered her head.

I walked outside.

For the first time since the barbecue, I could breathe.

But I still had one question.

Why had Lily been given the envelope?

The answer came from Rebecca.

My grandmother had apparently trusted Lily because she knew children couldn’t be bought.

She had arranged for a family friend to give Lily the envelope if anything happened to her trust.

The friend had been terrified.

So she waited.

Until Lily accidentally discovered the hidden compartment where the documents had been stored.

My daughter had found the truth by accident.

And my sister had attacked her to keep it hidden.

But there was still one final mystery.

The forged $125,000 transfer.

Rebecca had an explanation.

The money hadn’t gone to Carla for Carla.

It had been used to pay off a debt.

A debt connected to my father.

My father had secretly borrowed against the property.

He had nearly lost the house.

My grandmother had discovered it.

She had stopped him.

Then she changed the trust.

That was why my parents had spent six years pretending the house belonged to them.

They were terrified I would discover the truth.

But there was another document.

A mortgage agreement.

And my father’s signature was on it.

He had used my grandmother’s property as collateral without permission.

I looked at him.

“Why?”

He finally broke.

“Because I thought I could fix it.”

“With what?”

He didn’t answer.

My mother did.

“Carla promised she would help.”

I turned toward my sister.

Carla had been stealing money from the family for years.

My parents had covered for her.

And when my grandmother tried to stop them, they hid the truth.

Then Lily found it.

The next morning, Carla was arrested.

My parents were not arrested that day.

But their involvement was now part of the investigation.

And then Rebecca called me.

She said there was one final condition in my grandmother’s trust.

One that could change where my parents lived.
