PART 2 — THE NAME ON THE ORIGINAL RECORD The laundry-room door opened. Daniel stood there. My son.

The little boy I had held for the first time thirty years earlier.

The man I had spent my entire life protecting.

He looked at me.

Then at the phone in my hand.

Then at the tears running down my face.

“Mom…”

I stepped out slowly.

“How long?”

He swallowed.

“How long what?”

“How long have you been lying to me?”

His face changed.

Behind him, Arthur appeared.

My husband looked terrified for the first time in thirty-two years.

“Theresa,” he said.

I held up my phone.

“I heard everything.”

Nobody moved.

I looked at the woman.

“Who are you?”

She stepped forward.

“My name is Rebecca.”

Arthur immediately said:

“Don’t.”

Rebecca ignored him.

“I worked at St. Catherine’s Hospital.”

My stomach tightened.

“The hospital where Daniel was born?”

She nodded.

“I was there that night.”

Daniel stared at her.

“What are you talking about?”

Rebecca opened the binder.

“The original records were changed.”

Daniel looked at Arthur.

“Dad?”

Arthur said nothing.

I turned toward my husband.

“You told me Daniel was my son.”

“He is.”

“You told me nothing happened that night.”

“I was protecting you.”

I laughed bitterly.

“Protecting me?”

I pulled the phone from my pocket.

“By stealing my property?”

Arthur shook his head.

“That isn’t what this is about.”

“Then tell me what it’s about.”

He couldn’t.

Rebecca placed a document on the table.

It was old.

Yellowed around the edges.

There were handwritten notes in the margin.

Daniel stepped closer.

“What does it say?”

Rebecca looked at me.

“Are you sure you want to know?”

I stared at the paper.

“I’ve spent thirty years living with a question I didn’t even know I was supposed to ask.”

She turned the document toward us.

At the top was Daniel’s birth information.

Date.

Time.

Hospital.

Mother.

Then I saw the name.

My knees almost gave out.

It wasn’t my name.

I looked at Arthur.

“No.”

He closed his eyes.

Daniel picked up the paper.

His hands began shaking.

“Mom…”

I couldn’t answer.

Because beneath the word Mother was another woman’s name.

A woman I had never heard of.

Daniel looked at Arthur.

“Who is she?”

Arthur whispered:

“Someone who was never supposed to be part of your life.”

Daniel’s face went white.

“Am I adopted?”

Arthur didn’t answer.

I felt the room spinning.

Thirty years.

Thirty years of birthdays.

Christmas mornings.

School plays.

Graduation.

His wedding.

Every photograph.

Every memory.

And now one piece of paper had turned everything upside down.

But Rebecca wasn’t finished.

“There is another page.”

Arthur immediately stepped toward her.

“Don’t.”

Rebecca pulled the second page from the binder.

“This is the page they removed from the hospital file.”

Daniel stared at it.

“What does it say?”

Rebecca looked directly at me.

“It explains why your husband changed the record.”

I whispered:

“Why?”

Rebecca’s voice dropped.

“Because Daniel wasn’t supposed to leave that hospital with you.”

Silence.

Daniel looked confused.

“What does that mean?”

Rebecca answered:

“There were two babies born that night.”

My heart stopped.

“Two?”

“One was yours.”

Daniel looked at me.

“And the other?”

Rebecca hesitated.

“The other baby died.”

I covered my mouth.

Arthur stepped forward.

“That’s enough.”

“No,” I said.

“For thirty years you’ve decided what I was allowed to know.”

I looked at Rebecca.

“Tell me everything.”

She opened the final page.

And then she said something I will never forget.

“Theresa, the baby you were told died…”

She looked at Daniel.

“…was not your baby.”

My entire body went numb.

Daniel whispered:

“Then whose baby was I?”

Rebecca pointed to the name on the original record.

And suddenly I understood why Arthur had spent thirty years hiding the truth.

Because the woman listed there wasn’t a stranger.

She was someone I knew.

Someone who had been standing beside me in family photographs for decades.

Someone who had attended Daniel’s wedding.

Someone who had called him “my boy.”

Someone who had been part of our lives all along.

I turned toward Arthur.

“Who is she?”

Arthur finally broke.

And his answer was so devastating that I wished I had never opened that apartment door.

Because the woman listed as Daniel’s original mother…

was Maya’s mother.

And suddenly the affair, the stolen property, the secret documents, the hospital records—

none of it was the real story.

The real story was that Daniel and Maya had been connected long before they ever met.

And someone had spent thirty years making sure neither of them discovered why.
