PART 7 — THE CONFRONTATION Victor Hale’s building stood above downtown Chicago like a monument.

Glass.
Steel.
Security everywhere.
Rachel arranged a warrant based on the evidence we’d recovered.
Evelyn guided the officers through a service entrance.
Marcus stayed with me and Liam.
“You don’t have to come,” I told him.
He looked at me.
“I’ve been running for years.”
He glanced at Liam.
“I’m done running.”
We reached the executive floor.
The doors opened.
Victor Hale was waiting.
He wasn’t surprised.
He stood beside a large window overlooking the city.
“Chloe.”
My stomach tightened.
“You know my name.”
“I’ve known your name for eleven years.”
Marcus stepped forward.
“You killed my brother.”
Victor smiled faintly.
“That is an accusation.”
“You destroyed my life.”
“No.”
Victor looked at Marcus.
“You destroyed your own life by refusing to understand how business works.”
Marcus clenched his fists.
Rachel stepped forward.
“We have the ledger.”
Victor’s smile disappeared.
“Do you?”
Rachel held it up.
“We have enough evidence to reopen every investigation connected to Hale Development.”
Victor looked at me.
“You have no idea what you’re carrying.”
“I know exactly what I’m carrying.”
He looked at Liam.
“And that’s the problem.”
Liam moved closer to me.
Victor said,
“Thomas was reckless.”
I replied,
“He was your employee.”
“He was going to destroy thousands of jobs.”
“He was exposing fraud.”
Victor shook his head.
“You’re repeating things you don’t understand.”
Marcus said,
“My brother died because of you.”
Victor’s expression hardened.
“Your brother died because he couldn’t keep his mouth shut.”
Marcus moved forward.
Rachel stopped him.
Victor laughed.
“You think this ends with me being arrested?”
Rachel answered,
“It ends with evidence.”
Victor looked at me.
“You should have left the past alone.”
I stared at him.
“You sent someone to my apartment.”
“I sent no one.”
“You knew about Liam.”
“I know everything about Liam.”
My heart pounded.
Victor continued.
“Do you know why?”
I didn’t answer.
“Because his father left something behind.”
“The ledger.”
“No.”
Victor smiled.
“The ledger is only the beginning.”
He pointed toward the floor.
“Thomas kept a second record.”
I looked at Marcus.
Victor continued.
“A record of everyone involved.”
Rachel stepped forward.
“Where is it?”
Victor smiled.
“Ask Chloe.”
I froze.
“What?”
“You already have it.”
My mind raced.
The folder.
The missing document.
The paper I’d been protecting for years.
Victor laughed.
“Your former supervisor didn’t steal that document.”
“She did.”
“No.”
He looked at me.
“You gave it to her.”
I remembered.
Years ago.
Daniel had asked me to make a copy of a company payment authorization.
I had handed the document to Evelyn.
I had completely forgotten.
Victor said,
“Your memory is the final piece.”
Rachel suddenly understood.
“The original transaction.”
Victor nodded.
“It proves who authorized the transfers.”
“Who?”
Victor looked at me.
“Evelyn.”
Evelyn stepped forward.
“I was ordered to sign.”
Victor smiled.
“And now we have a witness.”
The police arrested him.
But as they led him away, Victor turned toward me.
“This isn’t over.”
I held Liam closer.
“It is for us.”
Victor laughed.
“You still don’t understand.”
Then he was gone.
Rachel turned to me.
“What did he mean?”
Before I could answer, Evelyn whispered,
“Because there is one person left.”
“Who?”
She looked at Marcus.
“Thomas.”
Marcus froze.
“My brother is dead.”
Evelyn shook her head.
“No.”
“He died eleven years ago.”
“I saw him alive six months ago.”
Marcus’s face went completely blank.
And suddenly, the entire case changed again.

PART 8 — THE MAN WHO WAS SUPPOSED TO BE DEAD

For two days, nobody slept.
Evelyn insisted Thomas was alive.
She said she had seen him at a rehabilitation facility outside Milwaukee.
Rachel investigated.
The records existed.
A patient had been admitted under another name.
The age matched.
The injuries matched.
The medical history matched.
But the patient had been transferred weeks earlier.
Nobody knew where.
Marcus couldn’t accept it.
“I buried him.”
Rachel looked at him.
“You buried a body?”
Marcus hesitated.
“No.”
“Then you don’t know who was in that grave.”
The thought destroyed him.
We drove north.
The facility manager showed us security footage.
A man with a cane entered the building.
His face was partially hidden.
But Marcus recognized his posture immediately.
“That’s him.”
We watched the footage again.
Thomas was alive.
We found him at a small rehabilitation center.
When the door opened, Marcus stopped breathing.
A man sitting beside the window turned around.
He was older.
Thinner.
Scarred.
But it was Thomas.
The brothers stared at each other.
Neither moved.
Then Thomas stood.
“Marcus?”
Marcus crossed the room.
They embraced.
For several seconds, neither could speak.
Then Marcus whispered,
“I thought you were dead.”
Thomas closed his eyes.
“I needed everyone to think I was.”
He explained everything.
After the accident, Thomas survived.
But Victor’s people were searching for him.
Daniel had helped him disappear.
Thomas had hidden the evidence.
He had watched from a distance as Marcus lost everything.
“I wanted to come back,” Thomas said.
“But every time I tried, someone got close.”
Marcus looked furious.
“You let me believe you were dead.”
“I thought it would keep you alive.”
“It destroyed me.”
Thomas nodded.
“I know.”
I stepped forward.
“Why did Daniel disappear?”
Thomas looked at me.
“Because he was protecting you.”
“What happened to him?”
Thomas’s expression changed.
“He was captured.”
My stomach dropped.
“Is he alive?”
Thomas nodded.
“He was held for years.”
Rachel asked,
“Where?”
Thomas gave her an address.
A private property in Wisconsin.
Police moved immediately.
Daniel was found alive.
Weak but conscious.
When I saw him, I couldn’t stop crying.
He looked at me.
“I’m sorry.”
I shook my head.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because every person I trusted was being watched.”
He looked at Liam.
“Is that him?”
I nodded.
Daniel smiled through tears.
“He looks like Thomas.”
Liam didn’t understand.
“Who is Thomas?”
Daniel looked at him.
“Your father.”
Liam stared at me.
I knelt beside him.
“Buddy…”
He looked frightened.
“Does that mean you’re not my dad?”
Daniel shook his head.
“No.”
“I was never your father.”
Liam looked at Marcus.
“Is he?”
Marcus crouched down.
“No.”
Thomas stepped forward.
“I am.”
Liam stared at him.
Then he looked at me.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
I struggled to answer.
“Because I thought I was protecting you.”
Liam hugged me.
“You did.”
That moment broke something inside me.
The secret I had carried for nine years no longer belonged only to me.
Now my son knew the truth.
And strangely, the truth didn’t destroy our family.
It finally gave us a chance to become one.
