SIX MONTHS AFTER OUR DIVORCE, A DOCTOR CALLED ME AND SAID, “YOUR SON WAS BORN THIS MORNING.”

PART 3 — THE CALL

I stared at the phone long after Julian’s call ended.

My hand was still shaking.

Clara watched me from the hospital bed.

“What did he mean when he said he made sure you never found out?”

“I don’t know.”

That was the truth.

For years, I had considered Julian almost family.

He had helped me negotiate my first major development contract.

He had stayed beside me when Mercer Holdings nearly collapsed during a disastrous expansion.

He had even given a speech at my wedding.

And now I was beginning to wonder how much of my life had been quietly rearranged by him.

My phone rang again.

This time, it was my attorney, Daniel Reeves.

I answered.

“Daniel.”

“Liam, where are you?”

“North Carolina.”

“With Clara?”

“Yes.”

There was a long silence.

“Listen carefully,” he said. “Don’t sign anything. Don’t authorize anything. And don’t speak to anyone from the company until I arrive.”

“Why?”

“Because Julian just called an emergency board meeting.”

“When?”

“Tonight.”

I looked at the clock.

“Why?”

“He says you are experiencing a personal crisis and that someone needs temporary authority over the company.”

My jaw tightened.

“He’s trying to take control.”

“I believe so.”

Then Daniel said something that made my stomach drop.

“There is more.”

“What?”

“Someone accessed the divorce file this morning.”

“Who?”

“We’re checking.”

I looked at Clara.

She had heard enough to understand that something was wrong.

“Daniel,” I said, “find every communication between Clara and me from the period before our divorce.”

“I already started.”

“And find out who changed my email routing.”

“I will.”

I hung up.

Clara slowly sat up.

“Liam.”

“Yes?”

“I didn’t want you to come back into my life like this.”

I walked toward her.

“You’re not responsible for what happened.”

She looked down.

“I tried to tell you.”

“I know.”

“No, you don’t.”

She opened the envelope again.

There was a photograph inside.

I picked it up.

It showed Clara standing outside a doctor’s office.

She was holding an ultrasound photograph.

On the back was a handwritten date.

Nine days after our divorce papers had been filed.

I swallowed.

“You kept this?”

“I thought one day you’d see it.”

I looked at the tiny image.

“My son.”

“Our son.”

Those two words broke something inside me.

For six months, I had believed my marriage ended because Clara chose to leave.

Now I was beginning to understand that maybe neither of us had actually chosen anything.

We had simply been pushed apart.

A nurse entered.

“Mr. Mercer?”

“Yes?”

“Your son is responding well.”

I nearly collapsed with relief.

“Can I see him?”

She nodded.

I followed her into the NICU.

My son was impossibly small.

I stood beside the incubator and stared at him.

His fingers moved slightly.

I placed one finger against the opening.

His tiny hand curled around it.

I couldn’t breathe.

“Hey,” I whispered.

“I’m your dad.”

The words sounded strange.

Beautiful.

Terrifying.

Then my phone vibrated.

A message from an unknown number appeared.

YOU HAVE UNTIL MIDNIGHT TO WALK AWAY FROM SOUTHSHORE.

A second message followed.

OR YOU WILL LOSE MORE THAN YOUR COMPANY.

I stared at the screen.

Then a third message arrived.

ASK CLARA ABOUT THE BLACK LEDGER.

I looked through the glass toward her room.

Clara was already looking at me.

Her expression changed when she saw my face.

“What happened?”

I walked back toward her.

“What’s the black ledger?”

She froze.

And for the first time since I arrived at the hospital, Clara looked genuinely frightened.

“You found it?”

“No.”

“Then how do you know about it?”

“Someone just told me to ask you.”

She closed her eyes.

“Liam…”

“What is the black ledger?”

She whispered:

“It contains everything.”

“What everything?”

“Every payment. Every fake company. Every person involved.”

“Where is it?”

Clara looked toward the hallway.

Then she said:

“Hidden somewhere Julian will never think to look.”

“Where?”

She looked directly at me.

“In our old house.”

My heart stopped.

“The house in Chicago?”

“Yes.”

“The house we sold?”

Clara shook her head.

“We never sold it.”

I stared at her.

“What?”

She whispered:

“Julian made you believe we did.”

And suddenly, I understood.

The divorce hadn’t just separated me from Clara.

Someone had been controlling pieces of my life for years.

And we had just discovered where the evidence was hidden.

PART 4 — THE HOUSE

We left for Chicago the following morning.

Clara wasn’t strong enough to travel, so she remained in North Carolina with her sister while I returned with Daniel.

Before leaving, I stood beside my son’s incubator.

“I’ll be back,” I whispered.

I didn’t know whether babies could understand promises.

But I needed to make one.

When I landed in Chicago, Daniel was waiting.

“The house is still legally yours.”

I stared at him.

“How?”

“That’s what we’re trying to determine.”

We drove to the old neighborhood.

The house looked exactly as I remembered it.

Same brick.

Same front porch.

Same oak tree beside the driveway.

But something felt different.

Maybe because I now knew that the last six months had been built on lies.

Daniel unlocked the door.

Inside, everything was covered with dust.

I walked into the kitchen.

The table was still there.

The same table where Clara had shown me those suspicious invoices.

I touched the surface.

I remembered her words.

I’m trying to protect you.

I had accused her instead.

Daniel walked toward the basement.

“There may be something here.”

We searched for nearly an hour.

Nothing.

Then I noticed something strange.

One section of the wall sounded hollow.

I knocked.

Three times.

Daniel looked at me.

“That’s not normal.”

We removed a panel.

Behind it was a narrow metal box.

Inside was a black leather ledger.

My heart began pounding.

The first page contained names.

Companies.

Bank accounts.

Dates.

Amounts.

Millions of dollars.

And beside some entries was Julian’s signature.

I turned another page.

Then another.

There were transfers from shell companies into accounts connected to Southshore vendors.

The total was staggering.

More than $48 million.

Daniel stared.

“This is enough to trigger a federal investigation.”

I continued turning pages.

Then I saw something unexpected.

My name.

Underneath it was a date.

The date of a payment.

“What is this?”

Daniel took the ledger.

His face changed.

“That’s impossible.”

“What?”

“This payment occurred after the divorce.”

I stared at the page.

A transfer had been made using my authorization.

But I had never approved it.

Daniel looked at me.

“Someone forged your signature.”

Then we found the final section.

It contained personal records.

Phone logs.

Emails.

Messages.

And a list titled:

CONTACTS TO BLOCK.

My name was at the top.

Clara’s name was beneath it.

Then her sister Maya.

Then my attorney.

Then several board members.

I felt sick.

Someone had systematically isolated us.

But why?

Daniel kept turning pages.

Then he stopped.

“Liam.”

“What?”

“Look at this.”

It was a document dated three weeks before our divorce.

A pregnancy test report.

Clara’s name.

Positive.

The date was clear.

I stared.

“She was already pregnant before I filed.”

Daniel nodded.

“That means someone knew.”

I remembered Julian telling me Clara wanted no contact.

I remembered his words.

“She doesn’t want to speak to you.”

I remembered believing him.

Then I saw another document.

A handwritten note.

DIVORCE MUST BE FINAL BEFORE BABY ARRIVES.

My blood ran cold.

Daniel whispered:

“This wasn’t about separating you two.”

“What was it about?”

He pointed to the Southshore documents.

“They needed you isolated long enough to complete the transaction.”

“What transaction?”

He turned the page.

A purchase agreement.

Mercer Holdings was about to acquire a major parcel of land.

But the real owner wasn’t the company listed in the contract.

The real owner was a private entity connected to Julian.

If the deal closed, Julian would secretly control a massive percentage of the project.

And my signature was the final requirement.

I sat down.

“So the $940 million deal…”

“Was designed to make him enormously wealthy.”

“And destroy me if it failed.”

Daniel nodded.

Then his phone rang.

He answered.

His face went pale.

“What’s wrong?” I asked.

He handed me the phone.

It was Clara.

Her voice was trembling.

“Liam, you need to come back to North Carolina.”

“Why?”

“The baby is gone.”

My heart stopped.

“What do you mean gone?”

“The NICU says someone signed him out.”

I couldn’t breathe.

“Who?”

She whispered:

“Someone claiming to be you.”
